Goldenday:

Voldar: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Live in Concert Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icon Tom Petty and his iconoclastic Heartbreakers blow the roof off the house as they settle in for a full blown concert featuring songs that have gone on to become radio staples as well as deep cuts and rarities. Appearing on Chicago WTTW's Soundstage in 2003, this two-part concert is a great introduction to a man who has spent nearly 40 years as the soundtrack to our lives. The songs featured on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Live in Concert include: • "Baby Please Don't Go" • "Crawling Back to You" • "Handle With Care" • "I Won't Back Down" • "I'm Cryin'" • "Angel Dream" • "Melinda" • "Born in Chicago" • "Red Rooster" • "Carol" • "Refugee" • "Love is a Long Road" • "You Don't Know How It Feels" • "Black Leather Woman" • "I Done Somebody Wrong" • "I Got a Woman" • "Thirteen Days" • "Wake Up Time" • "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms" • "Lost Children" • "Two Men Talkin'" It seems rather easy to take some of the older—or classic, if you like—rock musicians for granted. The newest, hottest artists dominate the charts, while seasoned often at-their-peak musicians get left in the shuffle. While I don't think anyone has forgotten about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, their hits have dried up, even as they continue to release new music. Petty's time as a dominating force has come and gone, but his music and talent keep on trucking. The great thing about concert movies is that they allow you explore artists in their element, and Tom Petty is most surely at home on stage banging out some (see: a few) of his biggest hits. The simply titled Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Live in Concert is a great experience, for those who are lifelong Petty fans and those who just came in. This concert covers a lot of bases, from Petty's biggest hits to lesser known gems and everything in between. The caveat is that those looking for a concert of pure hits will be disappointed. Petty is not one to rest on his laurels, and this concert proves that tenfold. http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/tompettybluray.php

Voldar: The LiNE Win America Over With ‘American Girl’ on ‘The Voice’ Hailey Steele and Leland Grant, who we met on tonight’s episode of ‘The Voice,’ have an interesting relationship as pop country duo the LiNE. They met when he was hitting on her at a bar, offering up a shot of Jack. Though their relationship didn’t blossom romantically, they hit it off as pals and became writing partners, then eventually a singing duo. The best way to describe their bond isn’t brother-sister, according to Steele, who says, “We’re more like an old married couple.” The LiNE didn’t go country on tonight’s show, but performed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ ‘American Girl,’ winning over not only America, but also the entire panel of ‘The Voice.’ Blake Shelton‘s eyes lit up when he heard them, and he hit his button almost immediately, not even realizing there were two artists until he turned around. Christina Aguilera caught on quickly, as Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine each sang along. During the breakdown, the other three judges finally came around — first Xtina, then Cee Lo, then Levine. The crowd went absolutely nuts! “Individually, each singer has to hold their own,” Adam told the young duo. “The energy changed in the room. I want to be part of that energy … please!” Instigator and would-be matchmaker Cee Lo was nosier. “You guys are a couple?” he asked. When they denied it, he laughed, “Not yet.” Then he got down to business: “Great performance, great song choice. I enjoyed it.” Aguilera wasn’t letting them go without a fight. “I know something’s amazing when I hear it,” she said, “and I heard that with you guys. I could tell you guys were having fun up there.” To rub her opponent’s nose in it, Xtina brought up the duet act that Shelton sent home last year. Cold! Naturally, Shelton brought up his wife Miranda Lambert and their duets together, and the fact that he was first to choose the pair. Levine wouldn’t give up so easily, urging them, ”Sometimes the less obvious choice is the one you should go with.” They went with an even less obvious choice: Aguilera, who cackled in the panel’s face. This clearly bugged Shelton, who had some very sour grapes. ”I actually feel bad for them for that,” Shelton said. “I think they were fooled by flash and boobs.” http://popcrush.com/the-line-american-girl-the-voice/

SLQ: Sound City - A film by Dave Grohl Sound City. A Roswell Film. Coming Soon. www.soundcitymovie.com www.facebook.com/soundcitymovie @soundcitymovie

A teaser trailer for FOO FIGHTERS frontman and ex-NIRVANA drummer Dave Grohl's upcoming documentary about the studio where NIRVANA recorded its landmark album "Nevermind" can be seen below. A web site for the film has been launched at SoundCityMovie.com. Before Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California closed its doors as a commercial studio in May 2011, it was used by a number of legendary musicians, including FLEETWOOD MAC, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton and NINE INCH NAILS. The studios on Cabrito Road off the 405 freeway have been refurbished and are now rented out to producers, though the Skeeter family still owns and manages the place. Grohl has been vocal about his appreciation for the role the studio has played in furthering his career and has reportedly acquired the 1970s Neve sound board that served many artists, telling a member of the Skeeter family, "Thank you so much for the opportunity to own the board. I wouldn’t even have the computer I’m sending you this e-mail on if it wasn’t for this board." Sandy Skeeter told the Daily News last September, "I think there were a few other things that went into the ['Nevermind'] record beside the board, like [NIRVANA's] songwriting and their playing and production. But he's just the right person to have the board." Last month, Grohl opened up about the upcoming film in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine, saying, "When Sound City closed last year, it was a very sad day. That place was like a church. The list of people that recorded there reads like a virtual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame... We recorded 'Nevermind' there back in 1991." He continued, "That funky old place had the best drum room in world. The drum sound at the beginning of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' — that's Sound City. "I decided to make a film about that feeling you get when you put five guys in a room, hit 'record' and the hair on the back of your neck stands up." He added, "Expect some epic jam sessions." Artisan News caught up with Taylor last month at the first-ever Rock & Roll Roast at The Grove in Anaheim, California and asked him about the experience of working with Grohl (see video below). "[Dave is] doing a documentary about the legendary board from Sound City that everybody and their mom recorded on — everybody from 'Nevermind' to, actually, [SLIPKNOT's] 'Iowa'," Corey said. "And he's slowly but surely gotten all these people together to make music on that board again. And he called me. He was like, 'Would you like to do a tune?' I was like, 'Are you serious? I'm on a plane right now.' And it's really cool, because it's me, Dave and Rick Nielsen [CHEAP TRICK] on one tune. And I'm like, 'Ahh…. Excuse me?!' It's just a huge check mark on my bucket list, let's put it that way. And I'm really ecstatic. It's a really good tune." Other musicians that are expected to take part in the documentary include RATT's Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini, Lars Ulrich (METALLICA), Vinny Appice (BLACK SABBATH, DIO, HEAVEN & HELL) and Josh Homme (QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE). http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=169634

Tom Petty’s ‘Free Fallin” Gets Country Treatment by RaeLynn and Adley Stump on ‘The Voice’ Tom Petty’s ‘Free Fallin” Gets Country Treatment by RaeLynn and Adley Stump on ‘The Voice’ by: Ultimate Classic Rock Staff Yesterday RaeLynn / Adley Stump NBC Two country-singing female contestants battled it out on ‘The Voice‘ tonight with a dueling version of Tom Petty‘s classic cut ‘Free Fallin’.’ Coach Blake Shelton decided to pit 17-year-old RaeLynn against the more experienced Adley Stump. Both are country singers, but as Shelton suggested, ‘They’re both completely different.’ For RaeLynn, Shelton brought aboard his country music star wife Miranda Lambert as a guest mentor. While Stump had the honor of working with ‘American Idol’ champ and pop superstar Kelly Clarkson. We’re not ones to judge — oh, screw it, that’s our job — but it was a fairly bland a performance of ‘Free Fallin’.’ RaeLynn had a more affected twang to her voice, while Stump’s voice was more powerful but not as interesting. After the other coaches weighed in, Shelton decided to go with the younger Raelynn. She moves on to the next round of ‘The Voice,’ while Stump heads home.

Doblo backs down after complaint DOMINIC Doblo won't back down...unless he gets a warning from a major record company. The Morning Bulletin understands the Rockhampton mayoral candidate had received a notice from Universal Music Group Australia requesting he take down or alter his campaign jingle due to similarities to the Tom Petty song, I Won't Back Down. The two-minute jingle, which appears to be set to the music and melody of the Tom Petty song with new lyrics by Doblo himself, had been available on Mr Doblo's website until it was taken down on Thursday morning. It has been played regularly in radio advertising supporting his campaign to oust Mayor Brad Carter. Mr Doblo denies the reason the song was removed was due to any copyright issues relating to the Tom Petty and Jeff Lyne composition. "We took the song down because I want to put out something different. I am making every effort to keep my campaign fresh, so there will be a new campaign song out on Monday and probably a few more to follow," Mr Doblo said. Mr Doblo said he had never heard I Won't Back Down before and was not aware of any similarities between his jingle and the hit song. "I haven't been tied down with any of that stuff. I just wrote the words. My campaign manager put that together as I am really only focused on the campaign," he said. Petros Khalesirad, whose company manages Mr Doblo's social media, website and blog sites, confirmed he had been contacted by the music group, but said there were no legal implications from the jingle and people shouldn't think there's any conspiracy theory. He said the music company informed the group the songs were very similar and rather than any "argy-bargy" a decision was made to freshen up the message. The jingle was the creation of a local company, The Twinz. Beau Crummer of The Twinz, who put the song together for Mr Doblo, said he had not been contacted personally by Universal about the jingle, but said the ditty was definitely within fair usage of the song. "I am a professional and I have been recording music for 20 years. I wouldn't put something out if it is going to be infringing on copyright." Mr Crummer explained that while he believed there were noticeable differences between the jingle and the Tom Petty song, he took the precaution of making amendments to the song to avoid any further criticism. A spokeswoman from Universal Music Group Australia said the matter was in the hands of its legal representative and "any subsequent progress, if applicable, will be a private and confidential matter between the respective parties". SLQ: 100 greatest artist of all time Tom Petty by Stevie Nicks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1976, I'd been in Fleetwood Mac for about a year when I heard Tom Petty's debut. I became a fan right then. I loved the way Tom's Florida swamp-dog voice sounded in cahoots with Mike Campbell's guitar and Benmont Tench's keyboards. Tom had the same influences we had — the Byrds, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills and Nash — but he dropped in lots of serious old blues. And Tom is such a great singer and so charismatic onstage. I became such a fan that if I hadn't been in a band myself, I would have joined that one. When I started doing my first solo album, Bella Donna, my first thought was, "Who produces Tom Petty?" When they said Jimmy Iovine, I got Jimmy, because I wanted my solo work to be as much like Tom's as possible. I first met Tom in the studio, and he was pretty much what I expected. There's not a fake bone in his body. Jimmy and Tom decided to give me "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," which they had written with Campbell. When they showed it to me, I was like, "Is this the right thing to do? I only get 11 songs and one of them won't be mine." And both Tom and Jimmy said to me, in a brutally honest way, "You don't have a single on this record. And here's a single for you." Tom is a great and loyal friend, but he's also honest like that. In 1994, I had just gotten out of rehab, and Tom and I had dinner. I wanted to make a new record but I was scared. I said to him, "Will you help me write a song or two?" I didn't really expect the reaction I got, which was, "No, I won't. You are one of the premier songwriters in this business. Go home and turn off the radio. Don't be influenced by anything. Just write some great songs — that's what you do." He reinforced that I was still Stevie Nicks. I wrote a song about him I've never recorded, but I will someday. It goes, "Sometimes he's my best friend, even when he's not around." In 2006, I did 27 shows with him. Tom made me a little platinum sheriff's badge that had 24-karat gold and diamonds across the top and said "To Our Honorary Heartbreaker, Stevie Nicks." On the back it says "To the Only Girl in Our Band." I keep it on my black velvet top hat. It goes with me everywhere. It's probably the most beautiful piece of jewelry a man has ever given me, ever. Voldar: Legendary Jimmy Cliff to open for Petty in Halifax Hall of Fame musician Jimmy Cliff has been named the opening act for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Atlantic Canada tour. Cliff, a Jamaican-born music legend whose career spans five decades, has produced hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want and Many Rivers To Cross. He’s also collaborated with artists like The Rolling Stones and Annie Lennox, while Willie Nelson and Cher are some of the names who have performed and recorded his music. The much-anticipated Petty show will be rocking out the Halifax Metro Centre on Thursday, May 31 at 8 p.m. The concert is one of three shows for Atlantic Canada, with the legendary rockers also taking to the stage at Mile One Stadium in St. John’s on June 2 and 3. According to a release from show promoter David Carver, there are still some tickets remaining for the show in Halifax and the two in St. John’s, but they are very limited. http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%94%D0%B6%D0%B8%D0%BC%D0%BC%D0%B8_%D0%9A%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%84%D1%84 http://www.metronews.ca/halifax/local/article/1132429--legendary-jimmy-cliff-to-open-for-petty-in-halifax

Lana Del Rey to join Tom Petty and Pearl Jam at Isle of Wight Festival The Born To Die singer will make an appearance on the Big Top stage on Friday June 22nd, with the performance likely to be a highlight of the weekend, with Del Rey this year having made the transition from cult status to mainstream success. Other names performing on the stage over the weekend include Kelis, Enter Shikari, Professor Green, The Darkness, Ash and Pulled Apart By Horses, with an appearance by Primal Scream on Thursday June 21st. One massive draw for music fans attending the weekend will be the fact that Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band are set to headline the Main Stage on the Sunday, while Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are rounding off the Saturday with their first performance on British soil for almost a decade. Other highlights include Biffy Clyro, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Example, Feeder and Noah & The Whale. Despite securing a place in the Isle of Wight line up, Lana may be feeling slightly nervous about singing live after being slated by critics for a less than pitch-perfect performance on high profile US comedy show Saturday Night Live. Tom Petty, “I Won’t Back Down” An arsonist set fire to Tom Petty’s L.A. home in May 1987, burning most of the house to the ground. While his wife and daughter stayed at a friend’s place in Beverly Hills, Tom began rebuilding the house on the exact same plot of land, using his basement recording studio – one of the few rooms to survive the blaze – as the foundation. He wasn’t going to back down to any firestarter. The house was still under construction by the time Thanksgiving rolled around. The Pettys, who’d already spent half a year in someone else’s home, were getting restless. Deciding that a game of softball was the best way to blow off steam, Tom got into his car and went out in search of baseball mitts. “I was going to drive down to the Sav-On in Beverly Hills and buy a dozen ball mitts so everybody could play ball,” he tells author Paul Zollo in Conversations with Tom Petty. “[It] was the only place open on Thanksgiving Day. So I’m at the traffic light, and I look over to my left, and there’s Jeff Lynne, who I’d only just recently seen in England. So I honked my horn, and he turned around, and we pulled over.” Petty and Lynne talked for a few minutes, reconnected during the Christmas holidays, and formed the Traveling Wilburys in early 1988. When Petty started writing songs for a solo album later that year, he naturally went to Lynne for help. Full Moon Fever was the result of that collaboration, and “I Won’t Back Down” was the album’s first single. A defiant song about standing up to one’s enemies, “I Won’t Back Down” is directed at the person who set Petty’s house ablaze. “Gonna stand my ground / won’t be turned around,” goes a line in the first verse, which calls to mind the charred ground where his original home once stood. Despite his personal connection to the lyrics, though, Petty turned “I Won’t Back Down” into an anthem for anyone struggling against some sort of oppression. The song isn’t really about a house fire. It’s about resilience. Petty certainly knew a lot about resilience at the time. Several weeks before the house fire, he successfully sued a tire company for mimicking one of his songs, “Mary’s New Car,” in a TV commercial. A few years before that, he waged a public battle with his own label, MCA Records, after the company tried to charge customers a higher sales price for his 1981 album Hard Promises. The Heartbreakers were waging a few battles of their own, too, and drummer Stan Lynch was already planning his exit by the time Full Moon Fever rolled around. “I Won’t Back Down” became Tom Petty’s musical motto, a song that summed up everything he stood for in less than three minutes. Like many Tom Petty tunes, the lyrics are simple and direct. The arrangement is straightforward, too, a rarity on an album filled with Jeff Lynne’s multi-layered production. Sometimes, the easiest way to say something is to just say it, and “I Won’t Back Down” speaks volumes. “I Won’t Back Down” Well I won’t back down No I won’t back down You can stand me up at the gates of Hell But I won’t back down No I’ll stand my ground Won’t be turned around And I’ll keep this world from dragging me down Gonna stand my ground And I won’t back down Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out Hey I, I’ll stand my ground And I won’t back down Well I know what’s right I got just one life In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around but I’ll stand my ground And I won’t back down Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out Hey I, I’ll stand my ground And I won’t back down Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out Hey I, I’ll stand my ground And I won’t back down No I won’t back down Written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne http://www.americansongwriter.com/2012/03/tom-petty-i-wont-back-down/

SLQ: Tom Petty’s ‘Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)’ Turns 25 by: Matt Springer There’s a dark, evil creature shambling through the back catalogs of the greatest rock artists ever, and its name is “The Eighties.” In 1987, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had just come off the road supporting Bob Dylan. They went into the studio and the beast of the Eighties made its move, resulting in ‘Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough),’ an album that turns 25 this month and sounds every year of its age. There seems to be no limit to the impact the diabolical beast had on most of the era’s mainstream rock recordings. From all-time classics to obscure platters, there’s always a synth lurking around every corner, and a too-clean sheen sprayed over so much of the decade’s recorded output. Behind the processed veil, however, ‘Let Me up’ stands as a record with an unselfconscious looseness and a well-earned status as an underrated gem in Petty’s catalog. Even with the Eighties breathing down his neck, Petty can’t help but keep the songwriting crisp, with a hint of twang. The record blasts out of the gate with its biggest single, ‘Jammin’ Me,’ which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts. It’s catchy and moves but suffers not only from the dated production, but lyrics that call out Eddie Murphy and Vanessa Redgrave. (It’s a co-write with Dylan; does he even know who Eddie Murphy is?) Fortunately, the record recovers quickly on track two, ‘Runaway Trains’ – although again, you have to take off your headphones and cover your ears through the first thirty seconds or so, one of those inexplicable synthy intros that Don Henley popularized. Once Petty’s voice cuts in, it’s a fast trip to the cutting heart of an emotional bedrock of a tune, with one of those choruses Petty has mastered, jacked through with big major chords and off-kilter metaphors — “I guess it’s one of those things / You can never explain / Like when an angel cries / Like runaway trains” — we’ll grant you, crying angels are pretty inexplicable, but runaway trains are usually investigated pretty hardcore, Tom. The rest of the record ping-pongs between these two extremes of strong songwriting backed with classic Heartbreakers sound, and uncomfortable moments where the Eighties are sitting on the sofa and drinking all the good beer. ‘The Damage You’ve Done’ and ‘Think About Me’ wouldn’t be out of place on a Petty record from two weeks ago, grounded in electric guitar and Stan Lynch’s big-bopping drums. Then ‘My Life / Your World’ takes a perfectly decent slide guitar acoustic intro and fades it into what sounds like a Phil Collins outtake. And if Phil Collins didn’t want it, Tom Petty has no business going near it. ‘Let Me Up’ closes strong; Benmont Tench’s piano on ‘How Many More Days’ is the perfect kind of Heartbreakers hook, one that takes the bones of Petty’s song and covers it with muscle and skin. The title track at the album’s close evokes the Rolling Stones with a crunchy guitar riff and an effortless swing. Is this damning with faint praise, or guilding a rotting lily? Maybe a bit of both. ‘Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)’ is a bit schizo like that, one of those records with big ups and deep downs, and if it isn’t clear from the above, an album where the ups make the downs worth weathering. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tom-petty-let-me-up-ive-had-enough-turns-25/

SLQ: No. 25 Tom Petty, ‘Free Fallin’ – Top 100 Classic Rock Songs by: Ken Kelley Tom Petty‘s 1989 record ‘Full Moon Fever’ was the first time in his career that he had released a record without his longtime backing band, the Heartbreakers. Still, even though Petty’s name alone adorned the record sleeve, the remainder of the Heartbreakers, with the exception of drummer Stan Lynch, supported him by performing on the record. In addition, Petty got help from Traveling Wilbury compatriots Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Roy Orbison, meaning this so-called solo record hardly lacked star power. ‘Free Fallin” was the most popular single from the record and, after one of the lengthiest debates in our young history (and with all due respect to ‘American Girl,’ ‘Refugee,’ ‘Breakdown’ and other classics), lands on the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs list. ‘Free Fallin” was the highest charting song released from ‘Full Moon Fever,’ ascending to the No. 7 position on the Billboard Hot 100. During the filming of a ‘VH1 Storytellers’ episode in 1999 Petty disclosed that the song’s lyrics were thrown together rather haphazardly, with primary consideration being given to how well they fit the melody of the song, as opposed to how well they delivered any story or message. Well, if that’s the case, then the meaning found its own way to the surface and into his audience’s hearts. ‘Free Fallin” was a coming-of-age song of sorts for the rocker. Here, he showed a new level of vulnerability, casting himself as the villain in a break-up and bitterly mocking his own so-called freedom. At least that’s how some pessimists choose to see it, while others focus instead on the positive celebration of freedom from the first half of the chorus. Glass half-full, glass half-empty; either way it’s a great song. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/tom-petty-free-fallin-top-100-classic-rock-songs/

Voldar: Tom Petty Through the Years When Tom Petty first hit the airwaves in 1976 with his debut single "Breakdown" he didn't seem destined to become a superstar - more like the kind of guy who would release a handful of moderately successful singles and never get beyond a cult following. But Petty just kept getting bigger and bigger as he scored hit after hit. Along the way, he's worked with an incredible bunch of collaborators, including Stevie Nicks, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and many others. Here's a slideshow of photos from Petty's amazing career. Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/photos/tom-petty-through-the-years-20111020#ixzz1t1ksubI8

Voldar: Amare Stoudemire’s Smashed Hand Recalls 1984 Tom Petty Incident If there’s one rocker who can relate to how Amare Stoudemire feels right about now, it’s Tom Petty. The basketball star injured himself by smashing his hand against a glass door holding a fire extinguisher in frustration following a playoff loss Monday night (April 30), echoing a similar incident from Petty’s past. In October of 1984, during what’s been described as long, arduous recording sessions for ‘Southern Accents,’ his sixth album with the Heartbreakers, Petty’s emotions got the better of him and he punched a wall, severely breaking his left hand. As he told Ultimate Guitar a year later while showing off his scars: “I wasn’t trying to cripple myself. I just backhanded a wall, but I hit it wrong.” Fortunately, after four hours of surgery, which included two pins being inserted into his arm, and months of therapy, Petty was able to resume playing guitar. As scary as the event must have been at the time, in retrospect he feels some good things came out of it: “Breaking my hand was unfortunate, but I think that improved the album quite a bit. It made me really sit back and take stock of it a little bit longer. I was too deep into the album; my perspective was hurting.” Petty and the Heartbreakers were able to complete and release ‘Southern Accents’ in early 1985, and the record found them breaking new ground by incorporating drum machines and horns into their music for the first time. The album’s first single, ‘Don’t Come Around Here No More,’ went on to become one of the group’s biggest hits. Let’s hope something similarly good comes out of Stoudemire’s momentary loss of control in the long term. In the short term, it appears his season is finished and that the rest of his New York Knicks teammates aren’t all that far behind him. They currently trail the Miami Heat 0-2 in their best-of-seven playoff series. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/amare-stoudemire-smashed-hand-tom-petty/

Voldar: В Ирландии уже готовятся. petty pursues a dream Tom Petty's memory is what passes for Proustian for a rock star. He can remember going to Johnny Cash's house in Nashville in the early Eighties with English songwriter Nick Lowe. It was a hot summer's day. The plan, in so far as there was a plan, was that they were going to have a Sunday lunch with Johnny and his wife, June Carter. Both of Johnny and June, it transpired, were sick at the last minute and were in the hospital. Tom and Nick still had their Sunday meal at Chateau Cash. "While we were seated at the table," Petty recalls, "one of the people working there came and tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Could you come into the next room. John wants to talk to you on the phone'. So I did. "He said, 'Thanks for coming out, sorry I couldn't be there'. It was very strange. And as we were leaving," Petty continues, "June was on the phone, and as each person left the house, she said goodbye to them. Very unusual. They were that kind of people." Lest we forget, in 1996, Petty and his band the Heartbreakers played with Cash on his second Rick Rubin- produced album, Unchained. Cash at that stage was living with a lot of physical suffering. "John had this incredible way of walking through extreme pain. He was on the road, and he called me from it. And he said, 'Well, I go on stage and nothing hurts'." You get roughly the same impression about Tom Petty, the highway troubadour who has overcome much emotional pain in his life, but survived to tell the tale. His 1999 song, Room at the Top, he once described as, "one of the most depressing songs in rock history", adding, "I was in a rough place when I did that record", perhaps meaning divorce (from his wife of 22 years, Jane Benyo) and other deep-seated personal difficulties. "I had some long periods of severe depression," he told USA Today in 2006. "I took some hard knocks and retreated from the world and lived in this little cabin. I didn't see a lot of people. I wasn't happy, and I didn't want to lay that on everybody. Even when I was in public, I didn't want to be there, and that's a terrible feeling. It took me a while to want to come back." What saved Tom Petty's life -- other than music -- was his marriage in 2001 to Dana York. Petty (who in 1988 became a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys, with his mates Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne) was believed to have been badly affected by the deaths of Harrison in 2001 and, in particular, Howie Epstein in 2003. Howie died from an overdose of heroin not long after being sacked from Petty's band, The Heartbreakers. "We said, 'You're going to have to quit this. It's gonna get you. You just don't win with heroin. You die or you go to jail. There's no middle ground. There's no other options'," Petty said later. He wrote in an emotional piece for Rolling Stone "...there's a great sadness, because Howie was never not a Heartbreaker. He just got to where he couldn't do it anymore." Petty was born on October 20, 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. He had "a rough childhood", describing his late father, Earl, as "abusive". They never reconciled. That inner agony might go some way to explain why Tom has a singing voice like a handful of southern gravel. That voice, however, is memorable on classic songs such as Refugee, Don't Come Around Here No More, Into the Great Wide Open, Running Down a Dream and Free Falling. "He's had so many powerful hits, but he's never contrived hits to get in the charts," Paul Zollo, author of Conversations with Tom Petty, says. "His songs are about solid songwriting, craftsmanship, inventive lyrics and tremendous musicianship. It's never about trends and fitting into one time. "He had an authentic rock 'n' roll dream and realised it without getting derailed in a way so many musicians were. "More significantly, he had a burst of greatness in his 20s, but unlike so many others, he continued to create music with substance and meaning, and sustained that quality over decades. He's certainly in the pantheon." And in The Simpsons, too. He appeared as a cartoon version of himself on an episode of the show, showing Homer how to write a song about a hot local babe who is anxious about budget problems in public schools. Voldar: Вот этого парня и его тётю кинул один дядечка,который обещал им подписать Тома и его команду в качестве свадебных лабухов.Парень,кстати не просто лох,а самый главный лох из Амазона,может поэтому хлопцы из ФБР так быстро раскрутили это дело. Amazon exec who wanted Tom Petty to play at his wedding 'swindled out of $165,000 by bogus booking agent' An Amazon exec who proposed to his girlfriend at a Tom Petty concert was allegedly fleeced out of $165,000 by a fake booking agent claiming he could book the singer for the couple's wedding. Brian Valentine, 52, wanted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to play at his wedding in July as a 'gift' to his new wife, fellow Amazon vice president Gianna Puerini, according to a criminal complaint. But after paying out the hefty sum and struggling to get through to the band's management to confirm the time, Valentine alerted the FBI, who arrested Chad 'Chris' Lund for suspected wire fraud. Despite his massive loss, there was a happy ending: Valentine could still afford to pay for the band to perform at the wedding in Seattle, Washington - this time, going through legitimate avenue The internet scam also came despite Valentine's lengthy background in computers; he worked for Microsoft for 19 years before joining Amazon on 2006. The criminal complaint, which refers to Valentine by his initials B.V., reveals that he became engaged to Puerini at a Petty concert in Seattle in June 2010, The Smoking Gun reported. They set the date for July 21, 2012 and last year, he 'decided that he wanted to have Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform at his wedding as a gift to his fiancé', FBI Agent Eric Petersen reported. Valentine went online to book Petty for the wedding and came across a now-deactivated website for Lund's firm, lundlive.com, which claimed it could book acts like Petty, Run-DMC and Ludacris. Lund, 44, claimed in an email that he 'had a relationship' with Petty's management and could settle a price for the show, eventually claiming they had agreed to $330,000, the complaint said. He gave Valentine a contract, which was apparently signed by Petty's manager Tony Dimitriades, and the Amazon exec wired half the fee - $165,000 - to Lund's bank account. Lund then gave Valentine the email address for Petty's production manager, and said he could contact him directly to 'work out the logistical details', according to the court documents. Yet Valentine was unable to reach him and so, just three months before the wedding, he contacted Petty's management company directly. 'We have never heard of Chris Lund or his agency,' Dimitriades wrote in an email. 'We are not aware of any deal for Tom Petty to play Seattle in July and I have never signed a contract for any such.' He added: 'It looks like you have been defrauded.' After seeing a copy of the contract he added that the signature was not his. Valentine hired a private investigator to track down the alleged scammer, who emailed him saying he had 'every intention of getting your $165,000 back to you out of my own personal funds'. But when the investigator told Valentine that Lund had left his Las Vegas home in early May, the tech boss contacted the FBI to report the fraud. Lund was tracked down in Illinois and arrested. He will appear in court on Monday. Valentine then paid for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to play a full set at his wedding at a space in Seattle's Industrial District. The payment has not been disclosed. 'The guy and his wife were the nicest people in the world,' a member of Petty’s road crew told the Smoking Gun. The wedding planners, True Colors Events, wrote on their Facebook page: 'After over a year and a half of working with an absolutely incredible couple in complete secrecy, it was beyond amazing to surprise the guests of their wedding with these amazing performances...Congrats G & B.' Voldar: Прямое попадание... The Killers: "New Album Inspired by Tom Petty, Talking Heads, ELO" The Killers will unleash their fourth album, Battle Born, on September 18, and while their past releases channeled the music of Bruce Springsteen, the new material is inspired by a wider-range of artists, including another American music icon: Tom Petty. "The Petty flavor is in us," drummer Ronnie Vannucci, Jr. explains. He adds that Battle Born will sound like "anything from Roxy Music to Jeff Lynne, ELO ... Talking Heads." Now that's an impressive mix. Excited! Fuse's Elaine Moran also grilled singer Brandon Flowers about his crazy fashion choices, including that feather-adorned jacket he sported during the band's last album cycle. His fashion inspirations? SLQ: Сегодня Барак Обама стал официальным кандидатом в президенты от демократической партии. В конце речи Билла Клинтона, который представил Обаму в зале прозвучала I wont't back down . Интересно, давал ли Том на это согласие? И если нет, то как он на это прореагирует. В своем время он запретил республиканскому кандидату использовать American Girl. Впрочем, хотя Том открыто и не высказывал своих политических пристрастий, он скорее сторонник демократов. Из западных СМИ: From E-News "Obama, in his first appearance at the DNC, greeted Clinton at the end of his speech as Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" filled the arena. We're guessing there won't be any cease and desist letters coming from Petty's camp tomorrow."

SLQ: Tom Petty 'Got Chills' When Democratic National Convention Played 'Won't Back Down' Rocker hits the red carpet with his daughter – and MTV VMA nominee – Adria By Steve Baltin September 6, 2012 11:15 PM ET From Silversun Pickups to Twisted Sister, artists have been lamenting the use of their music by Republicans in the 2012 presidential campaign. Tom Petty can relate. "I've been on the wrong side where I've had to tell some candidates to stop using my music," he told Rolling Stone on the MTV VMAs red carpet. But Petty was pleasantly surprised on Wednesday night, when his song "I Won't Back Down" played as President Obama walked onstage at the Democratic National Convention, after former President Bill Clinton's speech. "I got chills," said Petty. "They knew it would be okay. I've had a chance to meet the President and talk to him about the music he listens to." Photos: 2012 MTV VMAs Red Carpet Petty was on hand at the VMAs with his daughter and music video director Adria, who scored four nominations for Moonmen this year thanks to her work on Regina Spektor's "All the Rowboats" and Coldplay and Rihanna's "Princess of China." "I've pretty much worked with most of my heroes," gushed Adria, who was joined on the red carpet by not only her dad, but Spektor. "I'm here and even got a nomination for her work," said a grateful Spektor. Like Adria, the elder Petty established himself as a director back in the day with iconic visuals for his own tunes, "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance." Might his own daughter helm a clip for him one day? SLQ: Tom Petty Auctioning Off 'Favorite' Convertible on eBay Proceeds from Jaguar XJS benefit Doctors Without Borders By Rolling Stone October 10, 2012 8:00 AM ET Starting on October 11th, Tom Petty fans have 10 days to bid on his sleek, champagne-colored 1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible on eBay, where the rocker is auctioning it off for charity. "I have so many great memories associated with this car," says Petty. "When I began dating Dana (my wife), I asked her what her favorite car was. So, I phoned the office and said I wanted a champagne convertible Jaguar XJS. The next day, they delivered it to my house and showed me how everything worked and I took it for a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I was in heaven, as was Dana. This car has such an incredible design. My favorite car I ever owned. We sure are going to miss it." Jaguar stopped making the XJS in 1996. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Doctors Without Borders/Mйdecins Sans Frontiиres, the medical humanitarian organization that provides independent health care and assistance in over 60 countries.

Voldar: Не смог найти,но точно видел как Том выходил из лексуса RX 400,причем примерно того же цвета.(это я никак не успокоюсь) Tom Petty Talks About His First Musical Memories Tom Petty has spoken about his first musical memories as part of promotion for the new Sound City Movie, which is being made by Dave Grohl. The Heartbreakers band leader recalled the time he was taken to catch a glimpse of Elvis as a young child, when his uncle was working with Presley on a film. Coming face-to-face with Elvis inspired a 10-year-old Tom Petty to start collecting records and listen to rock and roll. You can hear Tom Petty talk about his first musical memories in the video below: видео по ссылке: http://www.sonicstate.com/amped/2012/10/09/tom-petty-talks-about-his-first-musical-memories/

Voldar: Жалко смогу только вечером посмотреть картинки,уж очень интересно на чем Том ещё катается.

SLQ: Voldar пишет: Жалко смогу только вечером посмотреть картинки,уж очень интересно на чем Том ещё катается Ну вот тут картинки нет, но есть цитатка из интервью 1986 года: Tom Petty gets into his shiny red 1985 Corvette, revs the engine and pulls out of the garage of his Encino, California, home. "Right now I'm into Corvettes," he says, flashing that sly, almost sheepish grin that still makes teenage girls swoon. "I like to drive my Corvette. That's my hobby."

SLQ: Goldenday

Paul McCartney, Tom Petty Decorate Skateboards for Charity Auction Paul McCartney and Tom Petty are among the music stars who have written lyrics to their songs on skateboards that will be auctioned online on November 29 to benefit a charity founded by renowned skateboarder Tony Hawk. McCartney wrote the words to his Beatles classic “Blackbird” on a board that belonged to Hawk, while Petty scrawled out the lyrics of “I Won’t Back Down” on another deck. Hawk, a longtime Beatles fan, tells Rolling Stone with regard to his decision to ask McCartney to write on his board, “I thought, ‘If I’m going to do this, I’m going for the top.’” He admits he was surprised when the rock legend agreed, adding that McCartney “told me his grandson skates and he tried doing it with him fairly recently — and decided he should not be doing that.” Among the other celebrities who contributed signed skateboards to auction is the late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, who wrote lyrics on three decks shortly before his death. Elton John also is among the stars expected to take part in the fundraiser. Proceeds from the auction go to the Tony Hawk Foundation’s initiative to create and maintain skate parks in low-income areas around the U.S. http://www.classichitsandoldies.com/v2/2012/09/24/paul-mccartney-tom-petty-decorate-skateboards-for-charity-auction/

Voldar: Pat Green, ‘Even the Losers’ – Song Review Pat Green‘s cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ ‘Even the Losers’ sets a great example for artists considering the inclusion of a cover track on their new album. The Texas country singer delivers a passionate performance of a lyric that is not his own — but it sure feels like it. Green’s rendition is more orchestral that the original, yet it never loses touch with the spirit and melody of Petty’s hit. The country hitmaker begins slowly, starting with just a piano and an acoustic, before building into the first chorus with strings. “Baby, time meant nothing, anything seemed real / Yeah, you could kiss like fire and you made me feel / Like every word you said was meant to be / No, it couldn’t have been that easy to forget about me,” Green sings. At the two-minute mark, the song begins to swell. Fifty seconds later, Green is reaching a climax not built into 1979 rock hit. “Baby, even the losers get lucky sometimes / Even the losers keep a little bit of pride / They get lucky sometimes,” he sings. It’s not easy to create a cover that’s met with approval from fans and critics — especially one of a well-known and still relevant song like ‘Even the Losers.’ Green is an experienced musician who adds just enough of his own soul to the song to make it unique, yet he doesn’t tamper with the hallowed fabric. Look for this song on Green’s ‘Songs We Wish We’d Written II’ album.

SLQ: Issue 37, May 1999 Years ago when his friend Bob Dylan told him he was a poet, Petty was flustered. “I couldn’t help feel it was like being told you’re an archer,” he said, “and you know you don’t even own a bow.” His reluctance to consider himself a poet is probably one of the reasons he endures as such an extraordinary and prolific songwriter. Relatively unburdened by the label of genius that has been more frequently attached to Dylan, Simon, Springsteen, and others, Petty has easily leapfrogged past his first hits into a realm of previously unimagined, unencumbered songwriting, writing new songs as joyously freefalling and uncontrived as the best that rock and roll can be. “It’s not supposed to be that good,” he said smiling. “It’s an alternative music, rock and roll. It’s dissonant. It’s blue. It bends the notes. So how much are we going to worry about it? As long as it’s got some soul to it, it’s going to be fine. It’s so simple you can walk right by it.” To celebrate Petty’s birthday today, let’s take a look at the stories, in his own words, behind 15 of these deceptively “simple” songs he’s written. Happy birthday, Tom! Free Fallin’ Jeff Lynne sat beside me as I wrote that song. Actually, I think “Freefalling” was his line. I think it was the only thing he said. I was just playing on a keyboard and Jeff was listening to this song. And I played that lick. And he said, “Whew, that’s good.” And I said, “Really?” And he said, “Yeah.” And then, almost to make Jeff laugh, I ad-libbed the verses. And he’s there with his tape-recorder recording it. And then I got to the chorus and I didn’t know what to do. And I remember it very well. He said, [imitating Lynne's low, British-accented voice] “Freefalling.” And I didn’t even know what that meant, but I just sang it. And he said, “Go up! Go up! Go up an octave.” So I went up an octave, and there it was. You know? It was done. Wildflowers I just took a deep breath and it came out. The whole song. Stream of consciousness: words, music, chords. Finished it. I mean, I just played it into a tape recorder and I played the whole song and I never played it again. I actually only spent three and a half minutes on that whole song. So I’d come back for days playing that tape, thinking there must be something wrong here because this just came too easy. And then I realized that there’s probably nothing wrong at all. Supernatural Radio I wrote that because I needed a couple of songs to make the album She’s The One. I wrote it at home one night after a session. I got into that space and it drifted in, and the very next day I brought it to the band and we cut it. We were all just knocked out. I loved the intro, because it takes a very long time for the guitars to come in and when they do, they just sound great. I played this little tiny guitar I have. But it made a great sound. And that whole line just emerged: “I hear you singing on my supernatural radio.” Stop Dragging My Heart Around I wrote it with Mike. Stevie Nicks wanted a song really bad for a couple years. So I wrote her this song called “Insider.” And I really liked that song. I played her the song. She says, “I love it. Can you put it down for me?” So I put the track down and I sang a vocal for the track. And she immediately wanted to sing along. I listened to it and I really liked the edge. I said, “Would it really sound totally lame if I said I wanted to keep this one and write you another?” She said, “No, not at all.“ I had a few songs that I didn’t think I was going to use and “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” was one. I played it and she said, “That. I like that.” I gave her that tape, and they took it. And they made it the duet — Jimmy Iovine and Stevie. Because my vocal was already on it. And so she filled it up with all this harmony and girl singers and made it much more of a pop song. And the next thing I know, it’s a big hit record. It probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day if she hadn’t done it. Southern Accents I started with the title. I thought at the time I was going to do an album based on southern themes and southern music. I wrote it at the piano. Very late at night, about four or five in the morning. I still think it’s probably one of my best two or three things that I ever wrote. I thought it was very personal, so that was one where it just took me over (laughs). I don’t know what happened there. I do have a vague memory of being extremely glad when I hit the bridge. I actually woke up my wife and made her listen to this song. Refugee Mike [Campbell] had the whole track down, the whole chord progression. It’s one of the first things that we actually wrote together. It took minutes. Literally, just a few minutes. I remember walking around the room, singing it, just circling the room. The words came very fast, and there are only two verses. And that was it. Finished. Learning To Fly That was inspired by the Gulf War. I remember that line about the rocks melting and the sea burning being directly inspired by seeing this whole thing on TV. I think that was the jumping off point. It became something a little more substantial than that but that is how it started. Breakdown I wrote it on a break from recording at the Shelter Studio in Hollywood. I think we took a break because we had recorded everything we had and I made up “Breakdown.” I wrote it on the piano. I still have that piano. I bought it (laughs). Many years later, it’s sitting in my living room. I wrote it very quickly. It’s a very short song. I played it to them, and they really dug it, and we made the record. I think we got the drumbeat from a Beatles record, “All I Got To Do.” We just varied it. That was the idea, to have that kind of broken rhythm on the highhat. Two Gunslingers Oh, I love that one. It’s one of my favorites. The whole idea of a gunslinger questioning his existence is great, saying, “I’m taking control of my life.” It really cracks me up, still, that song (laughs). I was tremendously pleased with that one. That was one of those rare moments when I actually got to say something and entertain the people at the same time. I wrote it in a couple of hours. Written during the Gulf War. Mary Jane’s Last Dance That was one I wrote during the Full Moon Fever sessions. I wrote all but the chorus. I just had the loop going around and around and really had most of the words and everything. And I played that tape for Rick [Rubin] and he liked it a lot and suggested I write a chorus. So I tried to finish it up while I was making Wildflowers, and there were maybe five years between the writing of the verses and the chorus. I don’t think I was writing about pot. I think it was just a girl’s name. The Waiting I remember writing that one very well. That was a hard one. Went on for weeks. I got the chorus right away. And I had that guitar riff, that really good lick. Couldn’t get anything else. (Softly) I had a really hard time. And I knew it was good, and it just went on endlessly. It was one of those where I really worked on it until I was too tired to go any longer. And I’d get right up and start again and spend the whole day to the point where other people in the house would complain. “You’ve been playing that lick for hours.” Very hard. It’s one that has really survived over the years because it’s so adaptable to so many situations. I even think of that line from time to time. Because I really don’t like waiting. I’m peculiar in that I’m on time, most of the time. I’m very punctual. Roger [McGuinn] swears to me that he told me that line. And maybe he did, but I’m not sure that’s where I got it from. I remember getting it from something I read, that Janis Joplin said, “I love being onstage, it’s just the waiting.” American Girl I think the original inspiration was Bo Diddley. If you listen to the beat, it’s a Bo Diddley beat. And it’s forever being equated with the Byrds. Even Roger [McGuinn] thought it was the Byrds. But we honestly didn’t think about the Byrds at the time. But it must have been influenced by the Byrds in some way, but I didn’t realize it at the time. There’s also no 12-string on that record. It’s just two six-strings playing off of each other. You Got Lucky That came from a riff that Mike had. It was almost a throwaway. Almost just tossed off. And the next thing we know, it’s the single. Don’t Come Around Here No More I was always very partial to that one. Odd song. That was an idea that Dave Stewart had, this tom-tom thing going. I think it was my idea to take it double-time when it got out a little ways. We really went nuts. We worked on that record for a long time. We wrote it very quickly. We were doing stuff like grabbing the tape and pulling it off the reel. There’s one part, if you listen where the piano does this rrrvvvvv thing. And we did that by literally grabbing the tape and yanking if off the reel. Face In The Crowd I wrote it one evening with Jeff Lynne. Just strumming our guitars. He had a musical idea for that one and I worked on the words. Because it’s very hard for me to sing other people’s lyrics. Jeff is a melody guy. And he’s very good at that. He would do a lot of editing. One good thing about him and the whole Wilburys experience is that I became completely unashamed. I would spout out anything. And that was really good for me. Because it was literally four or five people sitting there going, “Handle with care” (laughs). “No. Yes.” Spout out whatever I thought and it would immediately go to committee and it’s knocked out or it’s approved. And then that line would lead to something else. That’s a different way from how I usually work, and it really loosened me up. I’m not inhibited by trying anything lyrically just as you wouldn’t be inhibited to try anything on the guitar. You just want to keep letting your mind go and seeing what falls out (laughs). —By Paul Zollo From Performing Songwriter Issue 37 Happy Birthday, Tom Petty! inShare

Voldar: Jeff Lynne sat beside me as I wrote that song. Actually, I think “Freefalling” was his line.

Goldenday:

SLQ: Voldar

Tom Petty and Miranda Lambert say the economy is key at the polls this year. Aldean speaks of "watching the price of our dollar continue to drop and us owing every other country all this money instead of trying to keep everything in house and take care of our own people." Lambert and Petty are focused on the small business aspect. "One thing that I am really proud of is that's I am able to be a small business owner and that I am able to give people jobs, jobs that they love and I have a job that I love," Lambert says. I would like to see small business return," Petty says. "And there's only one reason there's not small business: because a corporation moves in on the same street, there's cheaper labor that they outsourced to another country, and mom and pop are out of work."

SLQ: Tom Petty attends a basketball game between the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on November 11, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.

Last night’s festivities in Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre was the equivalent of a corporate-branded bizarro world where free Jameson seeped in through the walls of the Wilshire digs and a revolving door of random celebrities, V.I.P.’s and musicians paid tribute to Tom Petty for over 150 minutes straight. Running through his seemingly endless trough of hit songs with the Heartbreakers, several tunes from Petty’s solo album Wildflowers (1994) and one from Traveling Wilburys, the evening was just one big damn liquor-fueled tribute, both on stage (notably more so) and in the crowd. Special guests included Johnny Depp, Har Mar Superstar, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, Petter Ericsson Stakee of Alberta Cross, the Followill bassist from Kings of Leon, Sarah Silverman, Eagles of Death Metal, Karen Elson, Doug from The Hangover 1 & 2, Nicole Atkins, Patrick Carney from The Black Keys, Cory Chisel, Butch Walker, the lead singer from Guster, the drummer from Guns-n-Roses and more. A lot to keep track of when the liquor is free. Nicole Atkins and Karen Elson’s duet on the Stevie Nicks / Tom Petty classic “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”. - Johnny Depp’s six song cameo, including a brief guitar solo during “Its Good To Be King” (above), looking more-and-more like a cross between a modern Jack Sparrow and Keith Richards every day in his gypsy-hobo-bandit-cowboy-get-up under billows of smoke. - Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi of The Strokes tore through “I Need to Know” and “Honeybee,” respectively. Valensi and Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti then stuck it out for “American Girl.” - Eagles of Death Metal destroyed “Runnin’ Down A Dream”. http://livemusicblog.com/2012/11/16/photos-video-petty-fest-west-el-rey-theatre-los-angeles-ca-111512/

Petty Fest Coming To San Francisco Petty Fest will make its way to The Fillmore in San Francisco on February 27. Petty Fest San Francisco will feature performances by Nick Valensi of The Strokes, Boz Scaggs, Chuck Prophet, Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers, Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips, Jesse Malin, Kay Mar Superstar, Nicki Bluhm and Jenny O, among others, as well as a few special surprise guests. The artists will be backed by the Cabin Down Below Band. Tickets to Petty Fest San Francisco are currently on sale for $35. http://www.jambands.com/news/2013/01/29/petty-fest-coming-to-san-francisco

Здесь записывались Нил Янг (Neil Young) и Том Петти (Tom Petty), Сантана (Santana) и Grateful Dead, Foreigner и Cheap Trick, Nine Inch Nails и Rage Against the Machine, Джонни Кэш (Johnny Cash) и Элвис Костелло (Elvis Costello) – а также, чтобы мало не показалось, альбом “Nevermind”. Альбом “Sound City: Real to Reel” появится в продаже 12 марта. http://www.zvuki.ru/R/P/29730/

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to Headline Hangout Music Festival While Tom Petty‘s official 2013 touring calendar is still empty, it’s been confirmed he’ll headline the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Ala. this spring. The full lineup for the festival was announced this week, with Kings of Leon named as a second headliner for the three-day festival. This follows late-December rumors that Petty and the Heartbreakers would headline Bonnaroo 2013. The lineup for that festival has yet to be revealed. According to a YouTube video starring Weird Al Yankovic, that announcement will be made on Feb. 19. All tickets for Hangout 2013 will go on sale Feb. 15 at 10AM. Additional acts performing include the Black Crowes, Trey Anastasio Band, the Roots, Public Enemy and Gov’t Mule. The fourth annual Hangout Music Festival takes place May 17-19. Macca, Mumford & Sons and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers lead this year's lineup, announced on Tuesday (Feb. 19). The annual four-day music festival will be home to a rare U.S. festival appearance for McCartney, who headlined Coachella in 2009. Last year, the 70-year-old released a collection of standards, "Kisses on the Bottom," and performed with the remaining members of Nirvana at 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief as well as on "Saturday Night Live." Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons are coming off of an album of the year win at the Grammy Awards: "Babel," their sophomore album which scored a massive debut upon its release last September, walked away with the top prize at the ceremony earlier this month. The Mumfords last played Bonnaroo in 2011, where the folk-rock group performed to a massive crowd on the second-biggest stage. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers round out the headliners for the 2013 fest, seven years after leading the 2006 lineup. The legendary rock group was also announced as the headliner of the 2013 Firefly Music Festival, which will take place one weekend after Bonnaroo at Delaware's Dover International Speedway. http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1549314/bonnaroo-2013-lineup-paul-mccartney-mumford-sons-tom-petty-headlining

SLQ: Tom Petty Plots Intimate Summer Tour: 'There's No Telling What We'll Do' POSTED: February 28, 9:00 AM ET He hasn't written any set lists yet, but Tom Petty has his priorities in order for the two residencies he will play with the Heartbreakers in May and June at New York's Beacon Theater and Los Angeles' Fonda Theater. "You try to keep yourself entertained," the singer-guitarist tells Rolling Stone, laughing through his deep and gritty Southern drawl. "I'm gonna be there every night, and I want to enjoy it." Petty and the Heartbreakers will play at the Beacon on May 20th, 21st, 23rd, 25th and 26th, then move to the Fonda for concerts on June 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 11th. The shows – part of a U.S. tour that includes arena dates and festival appearances, one of them a headlining slot at Bonnaroo – will be Petty's first small-hall runs since a five-night stay at the Vic Theater in Chicago in 2003. Petty and the Heartbreakers also held epic stands at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1997 and 1999. "This is a good thing to do every now and then," he contends. "It gets the band members in tune with each other in a way that you don't get on a big tour. There's a different challenge than you're used to. We got together the other night, the band and I, and everybody is up for this. There's no telling what we'll do." That includes the possibility of debuting new material. Petty and the Heartbreakers are interrupting the sessions for their next studio album to go on tour; they resume recording in July with a probable release in 2014. "I'd rather people heard the record before we perform the songs," Petty says. "But I also like the songs and want to play them. If they're sounding really good and I get the okay from the head office, I'll do it." He adds, "We have this great little rock & roll band. I want people to see it in a setting other than a big arena." Birth of a Notion The idea of going back to intimate halls and playing long, deep-catalog sets came out of Petty's European tour last summer with the Heartbreakers (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboard player Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, drummer Steve Ferrone and multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston). The group played two shows at London's Royal Albert Hall, and Petty says, "That just felt so good. We were in close quarters. We felt free. And we came back with a renewed collective interest. "I don't want to do a 'greatest hits' night," Petty says of the New York and L.A. shows. "We should push ourselves, do things we don't even remember. It's about getting the best out of the band and to show people there are a lot of sides to us, the different kinds of music this band can play. We are a very good blues band. And we're a pretty good bluegrass band, believe it or not. We just don't get a chance to do that very much. You only get so much time in a concert – you can't do everything in one night. But I'm just gonna go where the wind blows us." Full Speed Ahead Petty describes the new album, not yet titled, "as kind of like [2010's] Mojo – to a new power. It's not as strict to the blues as that one is. But everything comes from the blues, and we've found something new – a new way to stamp the blues." The album is also "born the same way as Mojo," he goes on, "where we perform everything together, with very little futzing around with it after it's done. But more than anything else, it's about the songs. Writing a song is such a gift from God. You have to be patient and attentive, and I gotta stay at it a lot. But things turn up, and when they do, it's exciting and makes you want to go back and try it again." So far, Petty and the Heartbreakers have cut a dozen songs for the new record. "And of those, I hear six that I'm sure about," he says with obvious delight. "There may be more, but I'm definitely sure of those." He laughs again. "If I'm sure about one, that's exciting." Into the Great Wide Open Petty and the Heartbreakers begin rehearsing for the tour – especially the New York and L.A. runs – in April. "We'll sit down and go over everything," he says, "look at all of the old albums and see, first, what sounds good, which ones really resonate. I lead the way, but I work as a member of the group. I may have the final vote, but there's no one who's not going to tell me what they think." Still, he says proudly, "When I'm out there, they can pretty much do whatever I want to do. The interesting thing about these shows will be to see what happens in the heat of battle: 'Let's do some acoustic music. Let's switch instruments.' In the [1997] Fillmore run, there were times when it truly amazed me how they could follow me into crazy territory. There were days when we'd get to the Fillmore in the afternoon just to learn another song to play that night. That's the magic of a residency." Petty pauses thoughtfully when asked if he has considered doing full-album nights at the Beacon and the Fonda. "That could be done," he responds. "It's never come up before, but that might be nice." He shoots down another suggestion: songs by Mudcrutch, his early-Seventies proto-Heartbreakers band with Campbell and Tench, which reunited for a much-belated 2008 studio album. "There is a rule against Mudcrutch songs," Petty declares, "unless all of Mudcrutch is there." "But we're gonna have fun," he insists. "I promise you that. And I like to play these festivals. We're one of those old, lucky bands: Young people come to see us. It makes a difference. There are people who have picked up on you fairly recently, or they're just learning about you. It brings a different excitement into the crowd." "The last few years have been so wonderful for us," Petty says with a grateful sigh. "We're such happy campers – sickeningly happy." There is another low, grainy laugh. "It's going to be kind of disgusting if we get much happier." Voldar: Вот это новость,всё таки не одни фестивали в этом году,но очень хочется новый альбом,а его отодвинули на следующий год. 2013 TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED! YORK AND LOS ANGELES! Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will play shows throughout North America this summer, including headline appearances at major festivals, arenas and amphitheaters, plus multi-show residencies at the intimate Beacon Theatre in New York City and The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. Festival stops include the already announced headline appearances at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, The Hangout Music Festival and Firefly Music Festival. The very special New York and Los Angeles residencies are composed of five concerts at New York's historic Beacon Theatre and six concerts in the cozy confines of Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre. As many fans are aware, over the years Tom and The Heartbreakers have enjoyed returning to the intimacy of small venues such as their historic twenty show run in 1997 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, their five night stand at Chicago’s Vic Theatre in 2003 and, more recently, two nights in 2011 at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at Cal State Northridge to benefit LA local public radio station KCSN. The band's 2013 Summer Tour comes as the Heartbreakers take a break from the studio where they are recording their highly anticipated follow up to 2010’s Mojo. The as-yet-untitled new record will be released on Reprise Records in 2014. - See more at: http://www.tompetty.com/news/title/2013-tour-dates-announced-the-tour-includes-intimate-residencies-in-new-york-and-los-angeles#sthash.2fe6Ze2J.dpuf

SLQ: The 2013 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony kicked off with Randy Newman sitting by himself at a piano, singing the first few verses of his hit “I Love L.A.” It was an appropriate choice, as the ceremony was being held in Los Angeles for the first time in twenty years. Newman’s performance shortly got exponentially more rocking when after a few lines in the spotlights on the stage revealed a potent guitar team of Hall Of Famers– Jackson Browne, Tom Petty and John Fogerty.

Voldar: Tom Petty Guitarist Mike Campbell: 'We're Free From 'Free Fallin''' On Petty's rarities theater tour, next album and recording with Bob Dylan Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just wrapped up a triumphant five-night stand at New York's Beacon Theater. When the band plays arenas and festivals, they rarely veer too far from their large catalog of hits, but these intimate gigs gave them an opportunity to resurrect deep cuts and covers they haven't played in years. (Next week they begin a six-night stand at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles.) Midway through the Beacon Theater run we spoke with guitarist Mike Campbell about the tour, his long history in the Heartbreakers and playing on Bob Dylan's 2009 LP Together Through Life. I've seen you guys a lot, but that first night at the Beacon felt really special. Did it feel that way to you? Yeah, we're free from "Free Fallin'." We're free from doing 20 songs that people expect us to play year after year. These shows are a chance to play songs that aren't on that list. It's just tough to connect with fans in a basketball arena. People are so far away from the stage. In that situation, there's a responsibility to the ticket buyer to give them what they want. We take that very seriously. We try to give them as many of the songs they want to hear, as well as a few surprises. They know that's the deal going in. Tom Petty Finishes Beacon Run With More Rarities, Covers and Heavy Jangle I feel like a lot of your fans know more than just the hits. It sure seemed that way at the Beacon. Well, every night's gonna be different. I don't even know what we're going to play the next two nights. But that's the exciting part of it. These nights are special. I guess that's true for the fans, but we thrive on spontaneity. We can pull out a song, maybe we rehearsed it, maybe we didn't, but we're gonna make it work on the spot. That's so exciting and so fulfilling as a musician, so the band is really enjoying it. What was the impetus for this tour? The main inspiration for this run of shows in New York and the Henry Fonda in Los Angeles is doing covers or album tracks that we don't normally get to play. We did this back in late 1997 or 1999, somewhere in there. We did a Fillmore West run like this. We've always thought we should do it again sometime, because it was so much fun and such a great chance for the band to grow as players. We're doing a couple of other shows to help pay for the party, but these two runs are the main reason we're out here. How long ago did you start rehearsing? We rehearsed for about three weeks last month. Mostly we just learned a lot of covers and songs from the deep tracks that we haven't played in years. We discovered a lot of songs that we had forgotten about, to be honest with you. We'd go, "Wow, it's a shame that we haven't played these before." So we're excited to try 'em out. How do you decide it's time to bring back something really obscure, like "Billy the Kid"? The ultimate decision, most of the time, will be on the singer. He'll go, "You guys know this one? I feel like singing it." Then we'll join in. Someone else in the band might say, "Remember 'When the Time Comes?'" Then Tom might go, "Oh yeah. I don't know about that one, but let's give it a shot." And if it sounds really good we'll go, "Oh, hey, that's worth keeping on the list." But ultimately it's up to the singer. There are songs in the catalog you've just forgotten about? I'm embarrassed to say there are. [Laughs] Like? Just the other day someone was asking me, "Are you guys gonna do 'About to Give Out?'" I didn't have any memory of that song at all. There are songs that do get lost along the way, but as soon as you pull them out it all comes back to you. I'm thrilled you guys are doing "Tweeter and the Monkey Man." I never thought I'd hear that live. I like that song a lot. We've done "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" before. One of us said, "Are we going to do a Wilburys song?" We said, "Let's not do one of those. How about something else?" And Tom said, "How about 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man?" I remembered the title, but it took until he played the chorus for me to remember how it went. But then it all came back to me, and we played it a few times. The band loved it. It's got 10 verses. It's like a book [laughs]. But it's cool. I love the way Dylan writes, just on and on. The story is like a movie. Hearing "Stepping Stone" was great, too. That was Tom's idea. He came in Monday and he said, "I was listening to Paul Revere and the Raiders do 'Stepping Stone.' Not the Monkees version." Of course, we grew up on that stuff. We listened to the record and we said, "That's a great arrangement. This would be good live." We worked it up, and it always brings a smile. I feel like I'm back in high school at a teen dance. It reminds me of when I first started listening to music. "A Woman In Love" really came across well, too. I was surprised Tom wanted to do it. Every time we brought it up in the past he'd go, "Oh, that's too hard to sing. The chorus line is wearing me out." But this time he said, "Let's try this one." It was really nice to revisit that one. It's very powerful, and the music and the words are very emotional and powerful. It really connects on stage. I never thought I'd hear "Rebels" live. Yeah, and I hope people understand what it's about. [Laughs] I think a lot of times that song is misunderstood because of the title, but if you listen closely, it's not a negative song in any way. It's a politically correct song if you take the time to understand what it is. We kind of do a different arrangement, so it's kind of new to us. The encore of Chuck Berry's "Carol" had a bit of a rough start. I'm going to get technical here, but the song is in the key of G. Tom always starts it out with his signature riff and then the band falls in. For some reason, a roadie handed him a guitar that was tuned up for a different song. So he started in what he thought was G and the band came in on G, but his guitar was in A flat. We panicked and just looked at each other. We said, "OK, it's in A flat," and the band shifted into that. But Tom was kind of left holding the wrong guitar, so he went back and changed it back, but he realized "Oh shit, the band is in A flat now." He looked at me and said, "You gotta play the riff, man. I don't know where I'm at." I love that you brought that up, because our band thrives on spontaneity. We were able to pull it together, and we played it in A flat. It was fun. It was beautiful. I saw that the band was able to pull a train wreck into something good. On this whole tour, that will probably be the moment you remember as something special. I was also happy to hear "Billy the Kid" from Echo. That's one of my favorite albums, and you rarely do anything from it. Well, that was emotionally a very hard time for us. I haven't been able to sit down and listen to it because at the time we were losing one of our players [bassist Howie Epstein] to a disease – drug addiction – and he was not there, but he was there, and it was just really hard to get through that process knowing what was happening to him and not being able to do anything about it. So I put that album aside. I'll listen to it again at some point, but it's emotionally just too difficult. It stirs up too many bad emotions . . . I know there's some good songs on there, though. "Billy the Kid" is one of them. I like that tune a lot. "Room at the Top" is an absolute masterpiece. Thank you. Yeah, I'm gonna have to listen to that album if my head gets in a better space. "American Girl" is a nice way to wrap up the show, going right back to the very beginning. I think it's a good gesture. After they've put up with us for that long, at least give them something I know they want to hear. I still love playing that song. It honestly gives me an adrenaline rush every time, still. That song changed your life in a lot of ways. In a lot of ways, yeah. We were in the studio and we actually found some little sound and harmonics and vibe that was ours – "That's our sound." That song is when it kind of happened, so it'll always be special. "Refugee" has the same cathartic feeling when you play it towards the end of the night. The other night we were in rehearsal and we said, "Do you want to play 'Refugee?'" Tom said, "I think we need to play it." We ran through it and I said, "You know man, what a great song." I hadn't heard it in a very long time, but what a great combination of music and lyrics and energy. You know, I still love those songs. In the middle of those huge arena tours where the set list never really changes, do you ever get bored? No. I get, um, frusta . . . Well, there's two levels to it. One thing is you're doing your job and giving the people what they want. When I go see AC/DC, if they don't play "Back in Black" I'm gonna think, "Well, that was good, but man, I just shelled out $400. I would have liked to have heard songs I like." I understand that, but my attitude is – and I've worked real hard on this – but I don't allow myself to get bored. I try to get into a headspace where I pretend like this is the first time I'm ever hearing this song, and I get into that and I just try to discover it. I found that if I really put my head in that space then I can get into it. I can discover it all over again. But if you let yourself say, "Oh, not this one again," then you shouldn't even be there. I'm not gonna fall into that trap . . . But there is a part of me after the show – not during the show, but afterwards, where I think, "Well, I kind of wish we didn't have to play the same songs tomorrow night. It would be nice to change it up." And here we are. Starting the show with the Byrds; "So You Want to Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star" is a great way to set the tone for the night. That was Tom's idea. Lyrically, it just sets everybody into the right frame of mind. Musically, it definitely shows our inspiration and roots. Twelve-string guitars are just fun to play. It's a real tribute to Roger [McGuinn] and the Byrds. It's a shame they don't tour. I know David Crosby and Chris Hillman are dying to do it. Roger just has no interest. Well, I'll tell you what – that's why I treasure my band so much. It's hard to keep a band together. There's so many things that can derail it. There's a lot of great bands that have . . . for personalities or women or money or whatever, they just don't want to be in the same room. There's also bands that tour despite hating each other. You can often sense it when they're onstage. Oh yeah. What a terrible existence. I can't imagine. It's hard enough when you like each other, with the traveling and all. One of the cool things about the Heartbreakers is that it's the same guys from day one, besides [drummer] Stan Lynch. I don't want to be corny, but we love each other. As time goes on, we really cherish the longevity. That becomes something like, "Wow, we put a lot into this." There's something really valuable that very few people have. We're really grateful to have that. We really protect it. I think of groups like the Clash that had something so perfect and magical, and they pissed it away for no reason. We met Joe Strummer once. It was really touching. He came to the studio about a year before he died. We're sitting around talking and he said, "You guys are so great. You're together." Then he got real serious and said, "Don't fuck it up man. Don't fuck with it. Don't fuck with it." I could hear him. He was saying, "I really messed mine up. Don't follow in my footsteps." A lot of bands like that were so young and angry. They couldn't step back and see the big picture. I know. We feel very lucky and fortunate to be able to do what we do. You played guitar on Bob Dylan's 2009 album Together Through Life. What was that like? It was so much fun. I hadn't played with him in so long. I got the call, and he did not let me down. He's such a genius. The funniest part came on the first day. We walked in and I'm sitting there doing nothing. He walks straight over to me and he goes, "Hey, have you ever done a record on one microphone?" I said, "Well, maybe one song." He said, "I want to do this album on one microphone, like a Bing Crosby record." I totally got it. We put one microphone in the middle of the room, and the engineer has just got this look like a deer in headlights, like "Oh my God, what am I gonna do?" But it was such a beautiful concept, and that's pretty much how we ended up doing it. We would stand around the mic and the band would bleed into the mic and play in the room. If you were too loud you'd play quieter, since you know there's no mixing it later. I loved that about it. The whole thing took maybe two weeks. We did one or two songs a day. Bob is my ultimate favorite player of all time, so I was definitely honored to be a part of it. What's the status of the next Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers record? We are working on it. We need to write some more songs. It's similar to the Mojo album, playing live and blues-based songs. There's great songwriting and great lyrics. He really surprised me this time with some of the stuff he came up with. We hope to have it out next spring. I've heard rumors you're already planning a tour for next summer. Hopefully we can have the album out and tour a little bit, maybe go to Europe next summer. I don't really know yet, but that's the idea. Do you think that Mudcrutch are going to play again at any point? Oh, I'd love to. We were talking the other day about that. We want to do another album, but with all the touring and the Heartbreakers albums we don't have time to squeeze it in now. The east coast got robbed on that last tour. It's time to bring it over here. That was a really great band. We played some gigs on the west coast that went really well. That was a lot of fun, so I hope we get to do it again. That should do it. Thanks for talking, and I'll be back for the Saturday show at the Beacon. Awesome. It might even be polished by then [laughs]. Don't hold that against us. SLQ: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/q-a-tom-petty-on-his-rarities-tou...? Q&A: Tom Petty on His Rarities Tour, Writing With Bob Dylan 'I don't want to become a jukebox' By Andy Greene June 14, 2013 9:00 AM ET Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just wrapped up a series of 11 shows at the Beacon Theater in New York and the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. Huge hits like "Free Fallin'" and "Last Dance With Mary Jane" didn't make a single appearance. Instead, the show was built around rarities like "Rebels," "Wildflowers" and "A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)." The change of pace clearly reinvigorated the group, and they played some of their best shows in recent memory. Midway through the New York run, Petty paused to talk with Rolling Stone about the tour. I would imagine you're having more fun at these shows than your usual arena shows . Well, it's different, you know? Something different is really good these days. It's more intimate. There's a really free selection of material going on, and the crowds are great, so it's terrific fun. 100 Greatest Artists: Tom Petty On your last arena tour, did you get bored just doing the same hits every night? Well, in all the tours, I always put in some new stuff and some stuff we haven't done. But you can sort of get into a routine where you kind of really know the show really well. I don't want to become a jukebox, but I do enjoy all the gigs. I can't say I don't enjoy them, but this is pretty exciting. We've done this before at the Fillmore, and in Chicago some years back. It always breathes new life into things, and this is particularly good. We're really enjoying it. I want to talk to you about some of the songs you're resurrecting for this tour. Let's start with "Walls" from the She's the One soundtrack. I love that song. "Walls" came up in rehearsal one day. Our crew guys got us lists of all the albums. They keep records of everything we play, pretty much. The way we've done it is we've gone into rehearsal for, like, three weeks, which is long for us. We would just start to play and at the end of the night they would have lists of everything we played. And that would go on the next day. We'd be like, "What do you feel like doing today?" It would usually not be anything we played the day before. When we were done we had all these lists of things we played, and that's basically what I'm using to select the songs. I feel like "Walls" could have been a hit. Well, it probably should've, yeah. It was a confused record because it was a soundtrack record. They wanted different arrangements and different versions of the songs. I don't know that they ever figured out what was there. Let's move onto "Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)" from the first album. That was a real flash from the past. We used to play that on the first tour we did where we were going around doing clubs. Then we first went over to England. That was a big party of a show, and for whatever reason, that song just got left behind real early. When we re-addressed that one we were like, "Wow, this is good." What made you decide to cover "Friend of the Devil" by the Dead? Mike [Campbell] is a huge Grateful Dead fan. He started playing that one and taught it to the rest of us. That was back in the 1990s at the Fillmore. We put it out on the live anthology record a few years ago. I thought, "Yeah, that's doable. That's a really good song." Are you a big fan of the Grateful Dead? Not like Mike is. I like some of the Dead, but I don't know them like a hardcore fan would. How about "Tweeter and the Monkey Man?" I never thought I'd hear that one live. That was one [of the Traveling Wilburys] songs I had a hand in writing with Bob [Dylan]. We've just never done it. No one has ever done it. So I just thought, "This would be interesting to try." We played it and it came off entirely different, but kind of cool. We're really enjoying playing that one. A lot of people thought you guys were mocking Bruce Springsteen, but I've always seen it as an homage to him. Yeah, it was not meant to mock him at all. The song was supposed to. . . It started with Bob Dylan saying, "I want to write a song about a guy named Tweeter. And it needs somebody else." I said, "The Monkey Man." And he says, "Perfect, 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man.'" And he said, "Okay, I want to write the story and I want to set it in New Jersey." I was like, "Okay, New Jersey." And he was like, "Yeah, we could use references to Bruce Springsteen titles." He clearly meant it as praise. We weren't trying to knock anybody, and there's not much of it in there anyway. So we sat and wrote the song. The English guys [George Harrison and Jeff Lynne] left, actually. It was the only song that they were like, "This is just too American. We're out on this one." So the two of us just sat there for most of the afternoon, and then we edited it down the next day. This live version you're doing is really infused with a whole new energy. It's kind of taken on a life of its own with us. It's a whole different way of getting it over. I'm really enjoying it. It's a pretty durable song. You can do a lot with it. How about "Billy the Kid" from Echo? That's always been one of my favorites songs. I just wanted to play it. I hope we play that one again. Do you think you'll ever be able to play Echo songs like "Room at the Top" again? That's one I haven't wanted to do. I haven't wanted to even hear it since I did it, and I don't think I have. You never know. Sometimes you go back to something and it's different than you thought it would be. But that's one I didn't try this time. I feel like the whole Echo album has really grown in popularity since it came out. A cult following has grown around it. Yeah. I recently had a fan stop me and tell me how much that record had helped her through a bad time. And she said, "I know you don't like it." And I was like, "It's not that I don't like it. It was just a really hard period in my life." I haven't heard it in so long, but the last time I heard it I thought, "God, there's a lot more on here than I remembered." Do you think your next tour will be back doing the hits in arenas, or is this run changing the way you think about your shows? Well, it's hard to say. I think we'll wind up back in the big rooms again. I think that this could influence things quite a lot. It's just kind of a verification that the audience not only goes along with it, they like it. When I go to see people, I always kind of hope they are going to play some kind of songs I know. So you've got to know your audience. It's kind of something that is a blessing and a curse in a way. You're obligated to play some of that stuff that people know, but I don't think that's all you have to do. I think there's a way to fill everyone'e needs. So who knows? This may have a tremendous effect on us from here out. Yeah. When you did "A Woman in Love" at the Beacon, the place went insane. It was like you were doing "Free Fallin'" or something. Yeah. I know. It's really strange. We did "Angel Dream" and it got this huge response the other night. It was very satisfying. We did a lot of songs, and I want to try and play more of them. It would be a little surprising to turn out back on this kind of thinking, I think. Are you thinking about doing more runs at places like the Beacon in the future? I haven't got that far in my thinking yet. I'm still in the middle of this run. (laughs) I got six shows coming up in L.A. at an even smaller place. Then we go back to the big shows. I don't know and it's all speculation, but I would rather develop an audience around the quality of our work more than the popularity of our work. I'm very grateful we've been able to play hours of hits. It's a great thing, but not the point where people think that's the only songs you ever did.

Voldar: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Jam Out at Bonnaroo Even though Bonnaroo has broadened its base over the years, the festival – which wrapped up last night in Manchester, Tennessee – has maintained a tradition of slotting jam-band headliners to close things out on the main-stage. Not last night, though, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — masters of the three-minute pop song — reprised their role as 'Roo headliners, having first played the festival in 2006 on a Friday night. On the heels of their recent set of theater residencies in L.A. and New York, the band eschewed tried-and-true hits like "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Free Fallin'" in favor of deep cuts and covers from the furthest reaches of their vast catalog. At first, it seemed that the band may have jumped on Bonnaroo as Sunday night headliners so they could stretch out and jam for the masses – or at least, it did until Petty said, "I predict we're going to have an incredible time tonight. I don't have to be anywhere for hours!" before kicking into "Free Fallin.'" That blockbuster single joined other obligatory live staples like "Learning to Fly," "Refugee" and "Running Down a Dream" that were still highlighted throughout the show. However, the band did match 'em with unexpected album cuts ("Rebels," "Good Enough") and covers ("Baby, Please Don't Go," "Friend of the Devil"), appearing far more engaged in the process. The Bonnaroo jam crowd (i.e. the festivalgoers with little concern for leaving early to beat traffic, open-minded music lovers who routinely abide Phish's AC/DC and Ween covers) would've let Petty and co. get away with omitting "Free Fallin'" and a few other overplayed workhorses. The crowd actually seemed to respond best to things like Mike Campbell's guitar fireworks during an extended, blues jam mega-climax on the otherwise drowsy Wildflowers single "It's Good to be King," a centerpiece highlight of last night's show. Voldar: Review: Ageless Tom Petty & Heartbreakers rock on at Target Center He doesn’t have a new album to promote. He didn’t even bring any whiz-bang production with some awesome lighting and way-cool video. He didn’t even bring a particularly well-known opening act (remember the Smithereens?). However, on Saturday night at jam-packed Target Center in Minneapolis, Tom Petty proved why, 37 years after releasing his debut album, he is still one of rock’s most exciting statues in concert. How does he pull it off? Let me count the ways. 1. Yes, Petty barely moves onstage. OK, a little strolling around, a hand gesture here or there and tambourine on one song, but no dancing, intense body language or rock-star poses. There’s just one Tom Petty move: Sometimes, at song’s end, he stretches his arms wide, like Neil Diamond, with his eyes closed and the most satisfying smile on his face. 2. Petty sings with passion but never gets lost in his music, never breaks a sweat, never goes over the top. (The snarling “Refugee” was the only time he raised his voice.) Laid back is his style. It suits him and his music. He opted to take some songs in lower keys on Saturday but, for instance, on “Free Fallin’,” many of the 14,000 fans provided the high harmonies on what turned into a giant singalong. 3. The Heartbreakers are one of the best of the enduring bands in rock. Tight, forceful, spirited. There’s a good reason they’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Petty. Driving drummer Steve Ferrone, who joined in 1994, is machine precise. Benmont Tench provides all those keyboard fills and filigree. And Mike Campbell’s guitar defines every song. 4. Campbell, he of the black dreadlocks, is a guitarist of many voices, moods and styles — whether it was the stinging slide Saturday on “I Won’t Back Down,” the blistering explosions on “Love Is a Long Road,” the soaring trippiness on “A Woman in Love,” the gentle moaning on “Tweeter and the Monkey Man,” the heavy bent blues on “I Should Have Known It” or the intense exchange with Petty’s guitar on “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” Campbell elevates Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to greatness. 5. Petty does covers that salute his influences. On Saturday, he opened with the Byrds’ “So You Want To Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star” and also did the blues chestnut “Baby, Please Don’t Go,” even adding an amusing talking portion (about his bipolar gal) that wasn’t in Big Joe Williams’ original. 6. Petty doesn’t re-imagine his old hits the way Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young do. Petty is predictable — tried and true. 7. With no new album, this could have turned into a two-hour greatest-hits show. That’s not for Petty, who played plenty of hits but threw in some deep album cuts, including “Cabin Down Below” from his “Wildflowers” solo disc, an acoustic “Rebels” from “Southern Accents” and “Tweeter and the Monkey Man” from his Traveling Wilburys repertoire. (Petty’s phrasing and nasally voice sounded positively Dylanesque on this tune, which he cowrote with Dylan.) 8. Although he’s used state-of-the-art video cubes and special effects on previous tours, Petty used only a little stage fog and a red ruffled backdrop curtain on Saturday. Fans could summon their own visual extras from the many artful videos that Petty has made over the years. To be honest, it wasn’t practical for him to work with elaborate stage production on this limited 12-city U.S. summer tour, which included multi-night theater runs in New York City and Los Angeles, such major festivals as Bonnaroo in Tennessee and Summerfest in Milwaukee, and just a couple of arenas. 9. He may be 62, but Petty looks almost ageless. He has the same hairdo (though his hair is more light brown than blond now) with a beard that is once again in style. He still opts for jeans, a sport coat and an untucked shirt. 10. Let’s face it: Tom Petty is forever cool. He was the only younger guy whom Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne asked to join the Traveling Wilburys. Forever cool, indeed. http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/music/213729071.html

Q&A: Tom Petty Finishing LP 'Unlike Anything We've Ever Done' "I always say this, but I'm tremendously excited for this one," says Tom Petty, discussing his upcoming 13th album with the Heartbreakers, which he expects out early next year. "It's not like anything we've ever done." In this exclusive interview, Petty opens up about the record, his meticulous songwriting process and his band's recent deep cut-packed tour. He also shares critical thoughts on modern country music, discusses his road peers Bob Dylan and Neil Young and plans for a new Mudcrutch record. Says Petty, "There's a lot to do!" I saw two of the recent Beacon shows and Bonnaroo, and it seems like the band really stepped it up on the last tour. Yeah, I hear that from a lot of people lately. I think we have raised the bar a bit. We were saying on the plane [recently], "If we didn't feel this was getting better, we probably wouldn't be doing it." I think if we felt like we were sliding back a step or two, we wouldn't be as inspired about doing this. But we're in a good place right now mentally, and as a team we're all focused on the same goal and the communication musically is really fantastic right now. So yeah I think in many ways we have gotten better, yeah. It was incredible to see you play songs by the Zombies, Paul Revere and the Raiders or "Green Onions." It's cool to see you guys going back to where you came from and doing them your own way. Yeah, well you've got to bring something to it or there's no point in doing it, really. So that's really just roots music for us. We came out of garage bands in the middle Sixties. I mean, I started to play in a group when I was 14. That was when I first started to get paid to play, and those are our roots. We learned Rolling Stones, Them, Paul Revere, all the Animals, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, all that stuff was stuff you had to know how to play. And we were fortunate because it was a really good time in music. And so in theory we were sort of learning the blues. But we didn't really know that at the time. From there, we discovered Muddy [Waters] and [Howlin'] Wolf and Little Walter and all that stuff. We just tried to assimilate that – and the Byrds brought us into country music, you know. Some of that came into the mix. And then you know we kind of went down that road for a while, so it's really just a big blend of American music that we're playing and we've kind of rolled it all into one thing that we can put our own stamp on. I wanted to ask about the way you write hooks that seem headed in one direction, and then veer off somewhere else that takes the song to a whole new level, almost like a second chorus. Is that intentional? Well, I really focus on songs first. You know, you can have the best band in the world, but if you don't have material that's good, it won't matter. So really with us we're all focused on delivering a song first, you know, and I've always put a lot of care into writing. And when young musicians ask me what the most important thing is, I always say it's the song. You know, you can chrome a turd, but it's not going to do any good. You've got to have a song. So I put a lot of time into writing and a lot of care into it and hopefully you come up with something worthy of doing. Does that come from playing it acoustically alone, honing it that way? Yeah a lot of it does. I tend to write on an acoustic guitar or the piano. I have kind of a rule: if I can't sit down and play this and get the song over, I don't take it to the band, because most any good song, you can sit down and deliver it with a piano or a guitar. So I just roll in, especially lately. We've never rehearsed for an album, we just meet in a studio, I play the song on the guitar, and they just fall in and we work it out there and usually the first few takes are the best. That's the thing with the Heartbreakers. Their takes are usually the very early ones rather than the very later ones. But you know, it's just the way we work. We've never really hard rehearsals for records. It's gotten where it’s so instinctual. They're so ridiculously good. If I play them a song that I just wrote, they'll do the first take and it's suddenly a whole different thing than I pictured. And we usually go in and listen after one take and then we'll say "Okay, you should do more of this and you should do less of that." And in a few takes, we've usually got an arrangement. What's a song where the band really surprised you? I think all of Mojo surprised me, because I had no idea what the songs would sound like. I knew what they sound like with me playing them, but as soon as I show it to them, everyone naturally goes their own way. I've gotten where I don't really give out many instructions or try and write a part for anybody else. I just let them try to find their own way and they're very good. We've all recorded so much, we've spent a lot of time in the studio and they're really good at knowing what's too much and what's not gonna groove. It's all about grooves too, you know. You've got to lay down a groove and – I mean I feel like we've got one of the best drummers there is, you know, and he's just a rock. Like, he's unbelievable – we never play anything that doesn't feel good, you know? [Steve] Ferrone just gets better and better and better – he's amazing. You've played "Free Fallin'" or "Mary Jane's Last Dance" a million times. But when you see 70,000 thousand people singing along at Bonnaroo, does that push you to play it with energy? Oh yeah, I mean that's very gratifying because some of those songs I've played many, many times, but every time we play it, you feel that joy in the crowd and it kind of re-inspires you to do a good job on it. In Indianapolis recently, there were times I was drowned out by the crowd – they were so loud, it was coming through my vocal mike through my monitor. But it's a wonderful feeling you know to just know that that has been around a long time and its been handed down and handed down you know there was a young girl in the front row at Bonnaroo and when we walked out she held out a big sign that said "I was raised on your music," and I thought, "That's really sweet." How is the new music you've been working on? Have the songs developed on the road? We've worked on the album for awhile now. You know, I guess I always say this about the latest one, but I'm tremendously excited about this record and it's not like anything we've ever done. I think people are gonna like it. We're at a place where we're nearly done with it. I didn't play anything [live] because I've worked so hard on the sound of the record, I don't want people's first impression to be over YouTube, you know? We're nearly done with it so I would think early next year, it'll be out. Do you have a title for it yet? I don't have a firm title yet, no. And when you said that it's unlike anything you’ve ever done before, what do you mean? Well, you'll just have to hear it. I think we've kind of arrived at a style that is just different. The last album, we kind of went back into a blues. [This album] kind of started in the same place and then it moved into something that's morphed into something that's kind of like songs that we would've written maybe around [1994's] Wildflowers or [1979's] Damn the Torpedoes. But you know, it comes from a blues place and it's much more distorted [laughs]. But it's really got its own thing, and it's tremendously exciting for me, because I'm just so into it and I'm looing forward to getting back to the studio and finishing it. I just love recording. I just can't get enough of it. One good thing about this point in life is that recording has gotten so much easier for us. We can really realize what's in our heads pretty quickly without a lot of stress, so it's tremendous fun recording. And Ryan Ulyate, who began as our engineer on Highway Companion has become like a member of the band almost, you know? He got promoted to co-producer on Mojo. He’s been a tremendous help to us. I looked all my life for that engineer partner in the studio that would be perfect, and we found him. Are you listening to anything right now that you're excited about? I haven't discovered anything recently that I think is great, you know. I'm racking my brain right now I'm probably forgetting something. Judging by your radio show, it still seems like you spend a lot of time listening to deep vinyl cuts. Yeah, I have a big vinyl collection and I still think it's the best sounding format apart from the one Neil Young's got in his car. If they ever get that Pono [Neil Young's super high-definition audio platform] thing up and working, that’s something I'm really behind. I think that if people realize that with an mp3, you're only getting five percent of the sound that's there. But when you hear the entire thing . . . I think it would save the music business. It's such a drastic change. At the Beacon, you described some modern country music as "bad rock with fiddle." Well, yeah I mean, I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have. I'm sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they're just not getting the attention that the shittier stuff gets. But that's the way it always is, isn't it? But I hope that kind of swings around back to where it should be. But I don't really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up. I'm sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle Eighties where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos. I don't want to rail on about country because I don't really know much about it, but that's what it seems like to me. In addition to Neil, you have Paul McCartney, the Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan touring this summer. Is it crazy for you to think that everybody is still on the road? Well, we certainly didn't think we would way back when. The good thing is that you can grow as a musician, and if you keep some dignity about it, it's a viable thing. I can go see those artists and expect them to really give me something. It isn't going to be a rehash nostalgic evening. Are you going to tour next year off the new record? I think so. I want to do a Mudcrutch record in between there, so my next move is to get back with those guys after this. You guys never played the East Coast, right? That would be amazing. No. I saw Tom Leadon recently and we were talking about that, going to the East Coast with Mudcrutch. So there's a lot to do. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/q-a-tom-petty-finishing-lp-unlike-anything-weve-ever-done-20130805

Voldar: Оказывается слова Тома: some modern country music as "bad rock with fiddle." Rosen: Does Tom Petty Hate Tom Petty Music? At a concert at the Beacon Theatre this past May, Tom Petty called contemporary country music “bad rock with a fiddle.” Asked to elaborate in a recent Rolling Stone interview, Petty offered a slightly hedged version of the critique. “I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but [country] does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have,” he said. “I'm sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they're just not getting the attention that the shittier stuff gets … I don't really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up. I'm sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle Eighties where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos.” Petty is right that today’s country is rock-oriented, with old-timey instrumentation, like fiddle, slapped on as a folksy ornament — a little tip of the Stetson to tradition. He’s also right that George Jones and Buck Owens have lost their grip on the imaginations of today’s country artists, who look to other influences. Chief among them: Tom Petty. The fact is, modern country is flamingly, shamelessly Pettyesque. At Rhapsody.com, the critic Chuck Eddy compiled an excellent playlist of Petty-influenced contemporary country, including several covers of the great man’s songs by the likes of Taylor Swift. You can hear Petty in Nashville’s favored hybrid of tune and crunch — pop melody crossed with southern rock power chords. Check out songs like Jake Owen's “Wide Awake,” Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” and Eric Church’s “Two Pink Lines ” — and, especially, the Eli Young Band’s No. 1 hit “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” the most brazen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pastiche you’ll ever hear. In his heyday, Petty was lumped in with Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seeger, and other “heartland rockers.” But Petty is from Gainesville, Florida, and he’s audibly Dixie. Country stars like Keith Urban — Nashville’s favorite Aussie — mimic Petty’s nasal drawl; Music Row songwriters channel the sun-drunk beach-greaser vibe of early albums like Damn the Torpedos. Petty even offered a model for that country staple, the pugnacious Southern pride anthem, with his 1985 ballad “Southern Accents.” Petty has long been one of pop’s grumpiest declensionists, convinced that kids today are running everything, and pop is going to hell in a handbasket. (Cf. “The Last DJ.”) Has he now grown so dyspeptic that he even hates Tom Petty music? http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/rosen-does-tom-petty-hate-tom-petty-music.html

It’s Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Yearbook Photo! Mike Campbell to Organize Benefit Concert Mike Campbell, the longtime guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, will hold two benefit concerts in time for the holidays. The second annual Merry Minstrel Musical Circus: A Holiday Gathering and Goodwill Jamathons will take place at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on Dec. 20 and 21. ABC News Radio is reporting that there are two beneficiaries of the concert. The Tazzy Animal Rescue Fund is a shelter in Los Angeles for old and/or sick dogs. They also have programs for dog owners who are having difficulty in taking care of their pets. Campbell’s wife is the fund’s president, and the guitarist is on the board. The second recipient of the evenings’ proceeds is Manual Arts High School, one of the oldest high schools in Los Angeles. The school is looking to purchase new brass and woodwind instrumens. The concerts are a collaborative effort between Campbell and singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson. Although the lineup has not yet been announced, the inaugural event last year featured Jackson Browne, Bob Weir, Jeff Lynne and Campbell’s fellow Heartbreaker, Benmont Tench. The Dec. 20 show is already sold out, but tickets for the second show will go on sale at noon on Nov. 25 (Monday) at the club’s website. Tickets are $40. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/mike-campbell-benefit-concert/

Voldar: With a little help.... Benmont Tench Steps Out on 'Blonde Girl, Blue Dress' – Song Premiere Best known as a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a keyboardist for their pre-Heartbreakers band Mudcrutch and a veteran session player who's performed on the records of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Costello, among others, Benmont Tench spent most of his career playing outside the spotlight. But now the perennial sideman's friends and colleagues are acting as his session players on "Blonde Girl, Blue Dress." Check Out Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums of 2013 On the single from his forthcoming album, You Should Be So Lucky, a project 37 years in the making, Tench taps Petty to play bass, Ringo Starr on tambourine and bluegrass duo Gillian Welch and David Rawlings to sing. Tench wrote the song with Mudcrutch in mind, before deciding to cut it himself. Then he set about recruiting the musicians he wanted to play on it, a process that ran into a logistical difficulty. "Originally we had Ringo set to play drums on it, but there was some kind of mix-up about dates and we were under the gun, so Jeremy Stacey stayed on the kit," Tench tells Rolling Stone. "The next day Ringo rang up and said, ‘Let's cut it!’ And we had a perfectly good take, but it was missing a certain something. I asked him to come put some jangle on it, he turned up 20 minutes later with a canvas bag full of tambourines, played it twice, and suddenly it all came into focus. He's really something, that Ringo!" http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/benmont-tench-steps-out-on-blonde-girl-blue-dress-song-premiere-20131216 P.S.

Voldar: SLQ

allamina: ...

SLQ: Новости про новый альбом : Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers have nearly completed their new album, according to Benmont Tench. The Heartbreakers' keyboard player has been speaking to Uncut ahead of the release of his solo album, You Should Be So Lucky. When asked about the status of the new Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers album, Tench told Uncut: "I think we’re virtually done. We cut a lot of stuff; Tom just wants to get the right batch of songs. That’s the scoop on it." The release will be the band's 13th studio album, and their first since 2010.

SLQ:

allamina: Interview: Mike Campbell BY ADMIN ⋅ APRIL 16, 2014 JM: With the new Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album coming out, I assume that there will be a tour. Can you reveal anything about what the future holds? MC: We were going to go to Europe, but we were late getting the record in. We pushed that back probably until next year. So this year, it starts in August. We’re going to do the States, and a few Canadian shows. I think 30 shows spread over two months, with a break in the middle, the usual type of run that we do when we go across the States. We will be playing a lot of the new album, and a lot of the stuff that we normally do. The waiting is the hardest part! http://music-illuminati.com/interview-mike-campbell/

Tom Petty's Maximum Rock & Roll: The Heartbreakers Hit the Studio Inside 'Hypnotic Eye,' the Heartbreakers' raucous return By David Fricke April 2, 2014 11:00 AM ET "Do you know any other band that can do that?" Tom Petty asks, grinning, over a fast, taut crossfire of guitars, blues harp and ivory-lightning piano. "I don't," he answers himself proudly. See our readers' picks for the 10 best Tom Petty songs Petty is in the control room of his home studio in Malibu, blasting the 11 tracks on his next album. Hypnotic Eye, tentatively set for release this summer by Reprise Records, is the singer-guitarist's first studio effort in four years with his long-standing band, the Heartbreakers. It is also Petty's decisive return to the concise Sixties-rock classicism and drive of his first great New Wave-era albums, 1976's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and 1978's You're Gonna Get It. The echoes shoot out of the speakers, mostly in three-minute shots: the power-treble and clipped-fuzz guitars in "American Dream Plan B" and "Faultlines"; the swamp-snake organ lines coursing through the psychedelic voodoo of "Red River"; the bar-band charge of "Burn Out Town" and of the album's snarling finale, "Shadow People." Over everything, there is the cutting tone and seething impatience in Petty's still-youthful Florida drawl. "That's what Mike said: 'You sing like you did on the first two albums,'" Petty, 63, says, referring to Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. "Maybe this album does sound like that. But it's that band 30 years later." This is the first time Petty has played Hypnotic Eye for anyone outside his band or management. Campbell, keyboard player Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, drummer Steve Ferrone, multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston, and producers Petty, Campbell and Ryan Ulyate have been working on the record since August 2011 – "Burn Out Town" was cut in the first round of sessions – and Petty is still just shy of done. He was up late last night, fine-tuning the mix for "American Dream Plan B," a song about diminished expectations, delivered by a guy who still believes in a fighting chance: "I'm half-lit, I can't dance for shit/But I see what I want, and I go after it." "I knew I wanted to do a rock & roll record," Petty says after the playback, sitting in the performance room of his studio, surrounded by a cool armory of vintage guitars and tube amplifiers. "We hadn't made a straight hard-rockin' record, from beginning to end, in a long time." But he justifies the three years of periodic recording here and at the Heartbreakers' L.A. rehearsal space, the Clubhouse, this way: "You must get the songs. It takes time to write 10 or 11 really good songs." That first run of sessions in 2011 yielded several new originals that Petty put aside after deciding they were too close to "the blues bag" of 2010's Mojo. And he wasn't sure about "American Dream Plan B" even after he first played it with his bandmates. "Silence," he says, recalling their response. "I said, 'Listen, I think we have something here, but we're going to have to get excited about it.' " In fact, Petty adds, laughing, the Heartbreakers loved the song – he just had to drag the affirmation out of them. Petty also acknowledges that while he is the undisputed leader and songwriter, the Heartbreakers hold a vital, unspoken veto in the studio: "They can't hide it. If they're not lighting up, something's wrong. It would be very hard to make this record without a band that has been together this long, with those kinds of instincts. I'm relieved to have that." Petty has another release that could be out by Christmas: a two-disc reissue of his 1994 Top 10 solo album, Wildflowers, which includes 10 previously unreleased songs. Petty claims one of those finds, "Somewhere Under Heaven," came as a surprise when he heard it again: "I did not remember writing it, recording it, anything." He smiles. "And it was really good – uptempo but very unusual, in some strange time signature." There is also a live album hanging around, culled from Petty and the Heartbreakers' theater residencies in New York and L.A. last year. "I never thought I'd be this busy at this point in my life," says Petty, who promises to go back on the road this year to support Hypnotic Eye. "I never expected to be at this point, doing stuff and figuring out how to get it to people." But, he notes gratefully, "This band just grows and grows, and that's an incredible gift. I can't see us calling it off. They're still the guys I want to play with – and the guys who understand my songs the best." В 2002-м Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers были введены в Зал славы рок-н-ролла. В ответ Том устроил большой крестовый поход против мейджор-лейблов и записал концептуальную рок-оперу "The Last DJ", направленную против индустрии звукозаписи. Индустрия отмстила Петти полным забвением. На это Том объявил о скором уходе со сцены, но никуда в итоге не ушел. В 2006 году он выпустил альбом "Highway Companion", получил за него премию Billboard Music Awards. и окончательно остался на сцене." Трек-лист нового альбома "Hypnotic Eye" выглядит следующим образом: American Dream Plan B Fault Lines Red River Full Grown Boy All You Can Carry Power Drunk Forgotten Man Sins of My Youth U Get Me High Burnt Out Town Shadow People

SLQ: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, an L.A. band, stare at 'Hypnotic Eye' Randall Roberts LOS ANGELES TIMES Before easing into a conversation about his new album with the Heartbreakers, "Hypnotic Eye," the longtime Malibu beach-dweller Tom Petty has a score to settle. It's in response to an old Times survey of Los Angeles' most enduring rock bands. Specifically: He and the Heartbreakers shouldn't have been disqualified because of his north Florida roots. "We're an L.A. band," says Petty with a good-natured but emphatic tone, puffing on a vapor pen while lounging in his home studio. The Heartbreakers were birthed in this city, he adds. "We're certainly as L.A. as the Springfield were, or the Byrds," he says, then geekily lists Buffalo Springfield players and their hometowns before focusing on the Doors. His voice rises: "Jim Morrison was from Florida!" Petty's beard is hermit scraggly, as if he's been cooking his meals beneath the trees out back. He's wearing bluejeans and a black western shirt over a tee. The slight bugged him for years, says the singer, songwriter and guitarist, 63, mostly because of the ribbing he got from his accomplished peers. "I got the finger shaken at me by so many people. 'Hey, you're not an L.A. band!'" Add in that Petty and the Heartbreakers have never recorded outside of Southern California — early years at Shelter in East Hollywood and Sound City in Van Nuys — and his frequent lyrical nods to his home. "Free Fallin'," his solo ode to cruising the San Fernando Valley, cemented his residency years ago, as did the Roger McGuinn-suggestive Rickenbacker strum of "The Waiting" before that. Let the record show that Petty and his Heartbreakers, upon the July 29 release of their 13th studio album and after thousands of concerts (with more coming at the Honda Center and Forum in October), three solo records, hundreds of hours in area studios and countless nights in the PCH breeze, should be deemed an L.A. band — backdated to the mid-1970s. It doesn't hurt that his Malibu compound, one of a pair in the area, looks every bit the property of a successful entertainer. Expansively spread behind two levels of security, his beachfront property features a shiny Tesla sedan in the garage and a team of landscapers working the foliage. "Hypnotic Eye," only the second Heartbreakers album in 12 years, closes the argument. Opening with a basic statement of purpose — "I'm gonna make my way through this world some day/ I don't care what nobody say" — Petty and band roll through a collection whose emotions range from profound love to bitter cynicism. Petty tackles optimism on "American Dream Plan B" and recalls midnight interludes on the lovely midtempo love song "Red River." The tangled guitar line that opens "Power Drunk," courtesy of Mike Campbell, mixes with keyboard player Benmont Tench's organ chords on a song about the intoxicating allure of power. Closer "Shadow People" is a lovely meditation on isolation and communion. "Fault Lines" is the best Petty song in years. Time and timelessness It doesn't get any easier to make them. Petty says that as the years have passed it's gotten tougher for him and Campbell to pen a passable composition. "The two of us together turns into a recipe for procrastination," admits Petty. The pause is in part because of the pressure of his catalog as well as to the aging process itself, which he says makes it harder to focus. For generations, Petty and band have been the no-nonsense voice of a brand of rock that cut through pretense, haircuts and studio trickery to craft songs that resonated without being dumb, cloying, gratuitous or commercially designed trend hoppers. His classics since his rise in the mid-1970s have transcended subgenre, part of a philosophy that avoided scenes and synthesizers. The Heartbreakers first broke in England, where they found kindred spirits in bands such as the Clash and the Sex Pistols, but were outsiders by design. They were more interested in the sound coming from Los Angeles in the mid-1960s than the punk tropes of a decade later. "I didn't want to put on the outfit. I really felt an allegiance to their trip, and I loved the spirit of it," he says, "but our identity was too well formed to go that way. I remember one of them saying, 'You guys need to cut your hair.' And I was like, 'Mm, no.' Then I would be joining a club. I just want to be our own thing." Boogie rock, disco, metal, synth-pop, grunge, rap rock, indie rock, blog rock and dance rock have come and gone, but the Heartbreakers endure through a focus nearly identical in 2014 as in their first Los Angeles gigs. As they've remained true, though, the band has ceded its role at the center of the rock conversation. Petty's a reclusive guy by nature, part of his allure. (The only mention of straying from Malibu comes when he speaks of visiting one of his two adult daughters in New York.) But then I'm a bit biased when it comes to Petty's work. My first tortured teen love was soundtracked by "Hard Promises." Homesick on vacation in northern Michigan one summer and missing my girlfriend, "The Waiting" really was the hardest part. Later that year his and Campbell's song "A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)" hit a little too close to home, considering said girl was hooking up with a good friend. Years later during my wedding, Petty's "Wildflowers" scored my wife Jenny's first dance with her father, a song that now makes me misty-eyed. I know every inflection of "Here Comes My Girl," the way he draws out the word "eyes" before wondering how this love could feel so good, so right. As "Full Moon Fever" was going platinum, I was absorbing every nuance throughout 40-hour workweeks while shilling it in suburban Missouri as a retail record clerk. We couldn't keep the cassette in stock. ($5.32 cost, $8.99 list.) That body of work weighs on Petty. "After you've written 300, 400 [songs], you've got to really concentrate so you can get something that feels fresh and is worth the money to someone who has a whole bunch of Tom Petty records. 'Why would I buy another one?' Well, because it's worth it, you know?" Adds guitarist Mike Campbell later: "The bar is high." Faults but never default Less bluesy by design than 2010's "Mojo," his most recent Heartbreakers record, the 11 new songs on "Hypnotic Eye" draw on riff-heavy rock, gentle swagger, coolly recollected moments, blues (always blues), much masterful guitar work from founding Heartbreakers Campbell and Tench's typically light and efficient touch on piano and keyboards. "I wanted it to be a pretty rock 'n' roll album from top to bottom," says Petty. They started work on it three years ago between tours and were inspired anew, he says, by young rock bands and "the wild abandon of the sounds and energy. I wanted to do some of that — but in the way that we would do it." Cue "Faultlines," a riveting, surprising song about the fractures and tectonic shifts that occur within ourselves and our lives. A work that couldn't have been penned anywhere but Southern California or by anyone but Petty and Campbell, it confirms not only the group's stature but its continued inventiveness. "I love that song," Petty says, his eyes shining as he talks about the spark that generated the lyrical theme. "It's so strange how that stuff works, how it pops in your head." He was looking to accompany a unique rhythm track that Campbell had been riffing on. The lyric came just before a night out with his wife, Dana York, to see the Rascals ("Good Lovin'," "Groovin'"). "I wasn't going to miss that," he says, revealing a fandom that he harnesses in service of his radio show on SiriusXM, called "Buried Treasures." Just before departing for the gig, he noticed a map of the area's fault lines that York had left on the computer screen. A light bulb lit. "Just for a second I looked at it and went, 'Fault lines — I've got a few of those.'" After he chuckled to himself, he started writing. He polished the lyric off the next day and called Campbell and soon birthed a resonant new Heartbreakers jam. "See those fault lines/ Laid out like land mines/ It's hard to relax," sings Petty, his voice filled with that familiar drawl. "A promise broken/ The ground breaks open/ It falls through the cracks." As Campbell pours out a distorted and urgent guitar line and bassist Ron Blair guides the rhythm, the singer moves into his chorus: "I've got a few of my own," he confesses. "I've got a few of my own fault lines/ Running under my life." As is usual, Petty's responsible for the lyrics and many of the songs, with Campbell pitching musical ideas that Petty calls a prime ingredient of any true Heartbreakers record. Once they worked out "Faultlines," Petty says, "We called the boys and went to the Club House [the Heartbreakers' rehearsal space in the Valley], and we cut the track." He pauses. "That was kind of our M.O. for the record." "The conversation would go like this," says Campbell. "Tom would call up and say, 'I've got a couple of songs. Let's get the band together and see how they sound.' There was no sit-down." "When we started the record, it was more in the vein of 'Mojo,'" says Tench, adding that they recorded about 30 songs during the process, so he didn't know what shape "Eye" would take until he heard the finished product. "I noticed near the end of it that the songs were becoming more concise." Tench's work on Mellotron and piano fill in key moments with his restrained countermelodies. Petty agrees that he had to check his blues reflex midway through the process. He'd been listening to a lot of old blues music, and in the early sessions they cut four tracks that reflected it. "I listened to them and I thought, 'You know, we're going to end up going down the same road if we get hung in this. We should play some rock 'n' roll.' I don't like to make the same record twice." Being heard In fact, Petty and the band can't afford to repeat themselves. He will release "Hypnotic Eye" into an impatient market forever searching for new sounds and fresh buzz, where the notion of a new Heartbreakers album, while exciting to his fan base, will become part of a saturated musical-industrial complex that cycles through new records, mixes, streams and viral videos daily. Petty is well aware of the shrunken market for rock but tries not to think about it. "A lot of people will find it," he says calmly, toking on his vapor pen while a group of young musicians starts loading in gear for a session. "They may not pay for it, but they'll find it. I just have a feeling that the quality stuff somehow stays around and reaches people." He says that when he was just starting in the business, Elliot Roberts, best known these days as Neil Young's manager, gave him key advice. Recalls Petty, "He told me, 'Listen, every record you make is not necessarily going to sell more than the record you just made. It's not necessarily going to be better than the record you just made. But the secret to a long career is to always make quality music. Some will hit really big, but at worst, it's not going to go down too low, because you will develop a trust in your audience. They'll trust that it's worth checking out what you do.'"

SLQ: Новость про Тома, хотя к ней и Джефф имеет отношение Когда весной 2014 года вышел сингл певца Сэма Смита ( Sam Smith) “Stay With Me” многие обратили внимание на чрезвычайное сходство мелодии песни с хитом Тома Петти "I wont back down". 12.5% . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB-5XG-DbAA

Voldar: Somewhere Under Heaven Is Out Now “Somewhere Under Heaven” is the first track to be released from Tom Petty’s forthcoming album Wildflowers – All The Rest. Written by Tom and Mike Campbell and recorded in 1992, but forgotten in Petty’s archives until this year, “Somewhere Under Heaven” is a lost gem from one of the most prolific periods of Petty’s career, during which he wrote and recorded the album that became 1994’s Wildflowers. Tom Petty’s forthcoming album Wildflowers – All The Rest, which is composed of tracks written and recorded by Petty between 1992 and 1994, will complete the original Wildflowers album, which was initially intended by Petty and producer Rick Rubin to be a double CD. “Somewhere Under Heaven” is now available to stream and purchase at all digital retailers and can be heard during the end-credits of the Warner Bros Pictures movie Entourage, to be released tomorrow June 3rd.

Secret Messages.

SLQ: Goldenday

"A cleansing wash of classic rock with just the right touch of sweet-natured sentimentality" - NPR "Superb songwriting...This is a record brimming with catchy melodies, forlorn chord changes, and unique instrumental accents." - Consequence Of Sound "Mudcrutch returns with a second album...an updated sound, edgier tunes...rollicking, anthemic roots rock" - Rolling Stone "...elements of Southern swampiness mingling with sun-kissed West Coast mellowness" - Chicago Tribune "The new album is as fiery and romantic as a youthful tryst, a rock 'n' roll experience unsullied by the inevitable passage of time and unspoiled by the burden of experience...as vital as a band a third it's age" - Boston Globe

Victim of Circumstance"

Lake Shrine in the Pacific Palisades,

“Leave Virginia Alone,” the lead single and another previously unreleased song from Tom Petty’s long-awaited second half of Wildflowers—a collection he named All The Rest—is out today. Tom wrote “Leave Virginia Alone” in January 1993—very early in the evolution of Wildflowers. The song debuts alongside a video co-directed by Mark Seliger and Tom’s daughter Adria Petty. The video stars emerging actress Casimere Jollette (Netflix’s forthcoming “Tiny Pretty Things”) and was shot around Connecticut as well as in and around Seliger’s studio in New York City. In speaking with David Fricke yesterday on SiriusXM’s Tom Petty Radio, Adria notes, “We were very resourceful about trying to create a character that could be assigned to anyone. That’s why Virginia in this video is very mysterious but she has her little glimpses of characters. We really worked to cast someone authentic—that felt like they were really feeling their feelings and someone that you could believe. We wanted the song do the heavy lifting in this video, and sort of step out of the way and just give it something to breathe with.” Seliger furthers, “The one idea that kept coming back to both of us is that we really want Tom to be narrating the story. We really want to hear his voice as he runs you through this journey that this woman is having.” https://www.tompetty.com/news/new-song-and-video-leave-virginia-alone-debuts-today-2204041
