Goldenday: Чтобы не закрепить как следует здоровенный тюк сена над трассой в такой сытой, упорядоченной стране, как Англия, где любят педантичность... дикость какая-то. Вообще впервые в жизни слышу о таком ДТП.

Goldenday: Кстати, трагическая абсурдность этой истории напомнила нам с Олегом другую: как несколько лет тому назад кажется в одном из курортных отелей на втором этаже внезапно лопнуло стекло двери или витрины и обрушилось на выходящего из здания то ли сессионного бас-гитариста АВВА, то ли на их менеджера, одним словом, человека, имеющего к группе непосредственное отношение. Результатом стала такая же внезапная и нелепая смерть на ровном месте.

Nick Chandler, who was travelling behind the cellist’s van when it was hit by the half-ton bale, said: “The one consolation for his friends and -family is he couldn’t possibly have known anything about it.” Mr Chandler, 23, a wildlife education officer, of Chudleigh, Devon, was driving on the A381 near Halwell, South Devon, when he saw the hay bale start rolling.\ “It burst through the roadside hedge, rolled down another bank and landed directly on the van’s windscreen,” he said. “There was absolutely nothing the driver could do. Had he been a split second earlier the bale would have hit the back of his car and at worst spun it round. A split second later and it would have landed in front of him, perhaps giving him a chance to brake. “As it was, it hit the windscreen like a brick wall.” Mr Edwards’s van was spun into the path of an oncoming van. The other driver was unhurt but Mr Edwards -suffered dreadful injuries. “At first you think ‘a piece of hay, maybe he could survive that’, but when you try to clear it you realise just how dense it is,” said Mr Chandler. Another witness, Paul Sercombe, 44, also from Chudleigh, added: “When we got to him you could see he must have died immediately. He was sitting in his seat in the driving position.” ELO founder Jeff Lynne paid tribute to Edwards yesterday, saying: “I still think about him on stage in his woollen balaclava playing his cello solo with an orange. Now that was pretty original. Goldenday: Ещё немного про Эдвардса (нашёл на сайте Портера) Le Cygne (Eldorado Tour) This song, popularly known as The Dying Swan, was used for the infamous exploding cello performance. Cellist Mike Edwards played the song on stage by rubbing various citrus fruit across the bows. In reality, Hugh McDowell was backstage playing the real song so Mike was simply miming the song. At the end of the solo, Mike would press a button and the cello would explode. (Unfortunately, the explosion device didn't always work and Mike had to take bows for a cello played by Hugh!). The band no longer performed this song after Mike Edwards left the band in December of 1974. Unfortunately, no known recording of the exploding cello is known to exist, bootleg or otherwise. The classical piece, Le Cygne (The Swan in English), is the thirteenth movement of Camille Saint-Saens' The Carnival of the Animals. The cello and piano piece was used for an interpretive dance called The Dying Swan that is based upon a Tennyson poem of the same name. Because of this popular dance, Le Cygne is more popularly known as The Dying Swan.
